As part of our ongoing From Classroom to Community series, we continue to shine a light on the people who make Beachborough Prep what it is.
This time, we’re catching up with Katja Bennet – a familiar face to many, whose 20-year journey across different areas of school life, and love of Early Years, make her such a valued part of the team.
Hi Katja, can you tell us a little about yourself – what you’re passionate about, your background and what makes you, you.
I’m originally from the Netherlands, but my husband and I now live in Brackley. We have two grown-up daughters, aged 29 and 23, who both live with their partners. Outside of work, I’m very passionate about my horses – I have two, and I keep them in Hinton in the Hedges.
At Beachborough, I’m currently a teaching assistant in Mrs Raclawski’s reception class. I’ve worked in early years for the past four and a half years across reception, nursery and kindergarten, which I really love. Before moving into this role, I was a boarding house assistant, and over the years I’ve also worked as a cleaner and a kitchen assistant.
What do you love the most about being part of the Beachborough team?
What stands out to me most is how supportive everyone is. There’s a real sense that people are willing to step in and help each other out whenever it’s needed, which makes a big difference day to day.
It’s also just a very friendly place to be – there’s a genuine sense of teamwork and care for one another, and that creates such a positive atmosphere for both staff and the children.
What inspired you to do what you do and what keeps you passionate about it today?
During Covid, when I was working as a cleaner in Boardman, I found myself spending more time around the early years environment, and it really reignited my interest in working closely with young children.
I was very grateful that Beachborough gave me the opportunity to move into a part-time teaching assistant role and to study for my Early Years Educator diploma at the same time. That support made a big difference and helped me take that next step.
I really enjoy my job; seeing the children grow in confidence and develop during their time in early years is incredibly rewarding. I love seeing every child flourish.
