Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming part of everyday life, and schools are beginning to explore what that means for teaching and learning. At Beachborough Prep School, we see it as something to approach with both interest and care.
AI has a place, but it sits in the background as a supporting tool. It can enhance pupils’ learning and give teachers more time to focus on the children in front of them, but it will never replace the relationships, creativity and understanding that lie at the heart of a Beachborough education.
Teaching still comes first
Technology continues to evolve, but what makes great teaching has not changed. Children learn best through encouragement, conversation, curiosity and trust. That is where our focus remains.
At Beachborough, we are committed to providing a broad and engaging education that develops confidence, independence and a genuine love of learning. AI may help with certain tasks, but it cannot replace critical thinking, thoughtful questioning or the guidance of an experienced teacher.
Helping pupils make sense of AI
As AI becomes more visible in the world around them, it is important that pupils learn how to use it responsibly. We encourage them to question what they see, double-check information and avoid taking everything at face value. These skills are not only important for school, but also for life beyond it.
Keeping things safe and clear
As with everything we do, safeguarding comes first. We are careful about the tools we use and clear about how they fit into school life.
We also take data protection seriously. Any use of AI is carefully considered, and we do not share information unless it is necessary. On school devices, unsuitable or age-restricted platforms are blocked, ensuring that pupils can work within a safe environment.
Supporting teachers, not replacing them
In practice, AI supports rather than leads. Teachers may use tools such as Microsoft Copilot to help with planning, adapting resources and managing routine tasks.
What it does not do is replace the teacher. If anything, it creates more time for discussion, individual support and the kind of teaching that makes a real difference every day.
Working alongside parents
Much of what children see and experience with technology happens at home, so it is important that we work in partnership with parents.
Simple conversations can make a big difference, helping to establish consistent expectations and ensuring children feel confident and secure. For example:
- Encouraging children to question what they see online
- Reminding them that AI is not always accurate or reliable
- Helping them think about privacy and their digital footprint
AI will continue to develop, and we will continue to adapt thoughtfully. At Beachborough Prep School, our focus remains the same: helping children grow into confident, curious and capable young people. Technology has a role to play in that journey, but it will always sit alongside, rather than replace, the human side of learning.
