Sunday 21 June 2026 marked a significant milestone for former Beachborough Prep pupil, Eddie Hughes, as he celebrated his final day at Eton College.
Following a kind invitation from his parents, Neil and Elia Hughes, Dan and Sally Gross were delighted to attend the Eton College Musical Society’s School Concert, held in the magnificent Salata Auditorium.
The occasion was a fitting celebration of Eddie’s time at Eton and an opportunity to reflect on an exceptional journey that began here at Beachborough. His name is proudly displayed on the Honours Board in the Manor House, and it was a privilege to see just how far his talent and dedication have taken him.
Eddie’s achievements are truly outstanding. Securing a music scholarship to Eton is a significant accomplishment, requiring both exceptional musical ability and sustained academic excellence. His journey has been characterised by determination, resilience, and a strong work ethic – qualities that are nurtured and developed from an early stage of a Beachborough education.
Alongside his own commitment, Eddie has clearly benefited from the unwavering support of his family, who have encouraged and championed him throughout his journey. He also spoke with genuine gratitude for the many music teachers who have guided and inspired him over the years.
During the visit, Eddie reflected warmly on his time at Beachborough, particularly the encouragement and guidance he received from staff, including Judith Dunkley, who was Director of Music at the time. This early support helped to establish the foundations from which he has gone on to excel.
Before the concert, Dan and Sally attended a drinks reception at Evans Boarding House, hosted by Eddie’s Housemaster. It provided a wonderful opportunity to spend time with Eddie and his family, as well as members of the Eton community, where he is clearly held in very high regard.
The concert itself was a memorable finale to his time at the school. Performing as lead violinist in the final summer concert is a significant honour, and Eddie rose magnificently to the occasion. His superb performance of Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole in D minor, Op. 21 demonstrated both technical precision and expressive maturity, reflecting years of dedicated practice, expert teaching, and sustained support.
For Beachborough, moments like this are hugely significant. As Dan Gross reflected, “Eddie is a shining example of what can be achieved through talent, perseverance and the support of family and a nurturing community. It was a proud moment to see him achieve at such a high level. We are all looking forward to following his continued success in the years ahead.”
We hope to welcome Eddie back to Beachborough in the future, where he can share his experiences and inspire the next generation – and, of course, perform once again for our community.
