We’re kicking off the summer term with Sadie Lapper, our Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Designated Safeguarding Lead, in the first From Classroom to Community feature of the term.
Having joined the Beachborough Prep team last September, Sadie brings a deep passion for nurturing children’s character development and helping them discover who they are. In this Q&A, Sadie shares her personal story, offering insight into the experiences that have shaped both her values and her career in education.
Hi Sadie, tell us a little about yourself – what you’re passionate about, your background and what makes you, you.
I am really passionate about helping young people grow into confident, kind and resilient people; I’m driven by the belief that all children will thrive and flourish when they feel safe, supported and truly understood. I love creating opportunities that help them discover who they are, build strong relationships with those around them and navigate the challenges that life throws at them with character and courage.
My background blends pastoral care, safeguarding and character education with a lifelong love of sport, especially hockey. Hockey has played a huge role in shaping who I am, it has shown me how encouragement, belonging and high expectations rooted in care can really transform a person’s life.
As a mum of three, I understand school life not just as a teacher, but as a parent too. I see first-hand the hopes, anxieties and dreams families place in education, and I carry that understanding with me every day. What truly defines me is a complete commitment to doing what is right for every child, guided by warmth, honesty and an unwavering belief in their endless potential.
What do you love the most about being part of the Beachborough team?
The sense of community; there is a real feeling at Beachborough that everyone, staff, pupils and families, are pulling in the same direction, wanting the very best for every child. It’s a place where people look out for one another, celebrate each other’s strengths and embrace the wonderfully busy and vibrant nature of school life.
I also love the energy and creativity of the staff. Beachborough is full of people who care deeply, who are willing to go the extra mile, and who bring fun and positivity into everything they do. It’s inspiring to work alongside colleagues who believe so strongly in character, kindness and creating fantastic opportunities for all.
Most of all though, it’s the children. Their curiosity, humour and honesty make every day different. Seeing them grow in confidence, navigate friendships, discover new passions and surprise themselves – is why I do what I do. Being part of a team that supports them through all of those moments is something I feel genuinely proud of.
What inspired you to do what you do and what keeps you passionate about it today?
I was inspired by one particular PE teacher who through my teenage years saw potential in me, long before I ever recognised it in myself! That experience has stayed with me; she is the reason I wanted to be a teacher, and it made me realise how one supportive, inspiring and caring adult can influence a young person’s life. It is this experience that has drawn me to pastoral work because being part of a young person’s journey is a real privilege.
What keeps me passionate are the small but mighty moments of growth I see in the children every day; someone managing an emotion better than yesterday, when a tricky friendship issue is repaired, or when they discover confidence they didn’t know they had. Knowing that I can play a part in those moments and help create a community where every child feels known, supported and able to thrive and flourish, is what motivates me every morning.
