Head Teacher

Head’s Blog

“Every young person has a balloon of self-belief within them, and our role is to help inflate it.” James Shone

On Thursday, we had the privilege of welcoming James Shone to speak to the children in Forms V to VIII and later in the evening to Parents. His talk, about inflating balloons of self-belief, was both moving and inspiring, offering profound insights into how we can nurture confidence, resilience, and a positive mindset in our young people.

James’ own story is one of remarkable courage. Having been appointed as the Headmaster of Monkton Prep School in 2012, a routine medical examination revealed a brain tumour that led to significant sight loss and the relinquishing of his dream job. But rather than allowing adversity to define him, James used this challenge as a springboard to inspire others. His charity, I Can & I Am, is dedicated to helping young people develop strong self-belief, ensuring they recognise their own abilities and potential.

James’ inspirational talk led me to think about why are so many young people struggling? The answer is complex and would take much longer than this blog allows to answer but a contributory factor is no doubt the role of social media which often presents an unrealistic and curated version of success, leaving many young people finding themselves feeling inadequate, overwhelmed, and disconnected.

At the heart of James’ belief is this crucial truth: our children need to believe in themselves. They need to focus on what they can do rather than dwelling on what they can’t, for when young people develop a strong sense of self-worth, they are more likely to embrace challenges, seize opportunities, and navigate life with confidence.

In James’ talk to parents, he explained that every young person carries within them a metaphorical balloon of self-belief and that as parents and educators our role is to help inflate that balloon, ensuring that it remains buoyant even in the face of adversity. In doing so we need to celebrate areas of strength, as this encouragement fuels confidence. We need to model resilience, showing our children that life’s inevitable setbacks are not failures but opportunities to grow. We should foster an environment where kindness and collaboration are valued and finally, support them to recognise their potential, explore new interests, and develop their own sense of purpose.

This is the third time that I have heard James speak and his words left me with a renewed commitment to supporting our children in recognising their own worth. Beachborough is committed to ensuring that every child feels valued, empowered, and confident in their ability to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

Congratulating Lily!

Congratulations, Lily – all of your hard work has paid off!

Club Chef 2025 Results!

The children yet again displayed their superb creative and artistic culinary skills, cooking up a wide variety of fruity dishes that were judged by our Beachborough chef, Simon Banham. From beautifully sculpted watermelon sharks to dipped strawberries and Tarte tatins, the bar yet again was set very high for the judges. For artistic merit alone, it was decided that Dylan M should receive a special mention for his banana and duct tape cake! Based on the recent artwork that was in the news, fetching a cool 6.2 million dollars, Comedian is a 2019 artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan which Dylan beautifully recreated in icing. Whether Dylan has taken his cake from the Whybrow straight to Sotheby’s remains to be seen.

It was decided that a winner would be picked from both the Boardman and the Manor House for each club. Megan’s super sweet brownies were perfectly matched by her tart compote, Charlie’s banana bread was so delicious with the extra dried bananas and icing topping. It was great to see different fruit being used as in Zane’s delicious mango cake, as well as favourites such as succulent apple tarts as made by Alex. Lily’s Lemon Raspberry trifles had a brilliant bite to them with the lemon balanced so well with the rest of the pot and for technical ability, Arabella really showed off her skills with her raspberry filled puff pastry. Mr Banham however felt that one stood out and chose Max’s Rhubarb Meringue Pie as the overall winner, for not only it’s incredible taste but immaculate presentation, as well as using fruit that is in season. Well done to Max but big thanks to all the children that took part and parents that helped. Each child has been awarded a very well-deserved point for their club.

The results were as follows:

BBC Newsreader, Ben Brown, comes to visit!

Recently, Form III have been making their own news reports to bring the Roman invasion to life. Following this, they wrote some persuasive letters to a BBC Newsreader, Ben Brown, who happens to be Mrs. Keen’s father! Their hard work convinced the former war correspondent to come and speak to Form III-VIII about his career as a journalist for the last 30 years. Ben has covered many important events in recent history, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Queen’s death, wars in Iraq and Ukraine, as well as natural disasters such as the Boxing Day Tsunami. Ben discussed with the children what the news is and why it matters. Ben also shared a clip of his father, Mrs. Keen’s grandfather – Antony Brown, reading the news on television in 1961 to show how the news has changed. The children asked thoughtful questions about his life and career, including ‘What was the most astonishing place you have been to?’, and ‘Which story was the hardest to report on?’. He shared the process of creating a news report, explaining that often this would be on the go after collecting footage, or if back in the studio it would be at a desk. Ben talked about some of the more dangerous positions he has been in and being torn between maintaining his safety whilst also being in the thick of the action! All of the pupils found it to be a fascinating insight into life as a journalist and more than a few have been inspired to become a journalist in the future!

Puppy News!

We have a very special pup that we’d like you to meet… introducing, Connie!

Last year, the Beachborough community worked exceptionally hard to raise money for Dogs for Good UK. This was in the form of a Virtual Pet Show, a Summer Read-a-thon and, our highly successful Paws for a Cause Dog Show. We pledged to raise £5,000 to sponsor a puppy through its training, ahead of being partnered as a companion to someone who needs help to cope with life’s challenges, and we were utterly thrilled to eventually reach our goal!

As a result of this, we have received the wonderful news that our sponsored puppy, Connie, was born just before Christmas, and is currently taking her first steps in training.

You may be wondering why we chose Connie as her name; well, firstly, it’s a lovely nod to our school motto ‘Conemur Tenues Grandia’. Additionally, Connie joins our wellbeing dog, Arnie, and Mrs Mitchell’s dog, Bertie, which in turn, creates ABC and relates to learning at school.

Thank you to everybody who helped us achieve this goal, and we can’t wait to receive more ‘pup’dates from Connie in the future!

Stowe’s Prep School Hockey Tournament

On Monday 24th February, fresh off the back of a half term break, our 1sts and Colts A boys’ hockey teams took part in the annual Stowe Prep School tournament. For the 1sts, this acted as great preparation for their IAPS qualifying competition coming up next Monday 3rd March in Bedford and the boys acquitted themselves well, winning each of their first three games. A damaging 1-0 defeat to Summer Fields prevented them from making the final but a 3rd place finish nonetheless should give them confidence heading to Bedford next week.

The Colts A are now into the midst of their hockey season and having qualified for the IAPS National Finals, the Stowe tournament gave them another opportunity to find their form ahead of that. With a few key players missing, the team didn’t fare as well as they could have, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2 of their matches. Still, a confidence boosting afternoon at Maidwell Hall on Wednesday ensured that they are very much still on track to be a competitive force at the Nationals.
