“The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple.” — Stan Gudder

At Beachborough, we believe that a strong foundation in mathematics is essential for every child’s development. Maths is not just about numbers and formulas; it is about thinking logically, solving problems, and making sense of the world around us.

On Monday, we had the pleasure of welcoming The Happy Puzzle Company to support our Club Maths for children in Forms III to VII. The children experienced an inspiring and energising workshop designed to develop their thinking skills, resilience, and teamwork through a wide variety of puzzles and challenges. This approach makes problem-solving fun and accessible to all, showing that perseverance and collaboration are the true keys to success.

During the workshops, the children were grouped into teams and faced a range of engaging maths-based challenges. They tackled colour-coded jigsaws that required careful strategy and collaboration, tube connection puzzles that demanded logical thinking and creativity, and road map problems where they had to plan the most efficient logical routes. Every activity required pupils to listen carefully, share ideas, test theories, and refine their approaches. These are all vital skills, both inside and outside the classroom.

In addition to developing mathematical skills, the children also practised collaboration, critical thinking, resilience, and logical reasoning. It was wonderful to see them so engaged, and even more rewarding to watch them leave with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for tackling mathematical challenges.

Club Maths reminds us that learning mathematics is not just about getting the right answer, it is about developing a mindset that empowers children for life. A huge thank you to Mrs Berrington and the Maths Department for arranging this excellent day.

On Tuesday, Miss Lilley also hosted a parental meeting to discuss the revised PSHE and RSE (Relationship and Sexuality Education) curriculum. If you missed the meeting, you can access her presentation slides below.

On Friday, our Robotics Team will head off to Harrogate for the FIRST LEGO League Challenge National Final. We wish them the best of luck and much success. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Blithe and Mr Foote for all their support of the children.

Wishing you all a wonderful, and hopefully sunny Bank Holiday weekend.

Mr Blee’s Half Marathon for Mary’s Meals

On Sunday 27th April, Mr Blee took part in the Shakespeare Half Marathon — and his run went brilliantly! With a time of 1 hour 38 minutes, Mr Blee finished 4th overall, beating over 50 other runners in his U20s category.

Not only did he smash it on the course, but he also hit his fundraising goal! Mr Blee has successfully raised £1,030, which will provide a daily mug of porridge for a year to 53 pupils at our sponsored school in Malawi.

An incredible achievement — well done! Thank you for all your hard work, both in training and fundraising.

Chess Club Returns…

Chess Club returned on Tuesday 29th April, with William and Callum making use of the speed chess clock. Some new players also came along, which was wonderful to see. Beginners are very welcome, so do come along if you are in Forms V to VIII, every Tuesday at 11am.

EcoSchools Update: Spring Term Progress

We’re delighted to share an update on the EcoSchools programme, part of the nationwide initiative run by Keep Britain Tidy to help young people take meaningful action to protect the environment.

Over the past half term, 35 pupils from Form IV to Form VIII have been meeting every Thursday at first break to begin developing our EcoSchools action plan. Our group is full of energy and ideas, and it’s been fantastic to see pupils’ enthusiasm grow week by week.

Today, we shared our progress with Pre-Prep to Form III in assembly, encouraging our younger pupils to get involved too. Each form from Pre-Prep to Form III will now nominate two Eco Reps to join the team and help represent their peers as we move forward.

We’ve also set up an EcoSchools display outside the Food Tech room – please do stop by to see what we’ve been working on! This will be regularly updated as our projects develop.

One of our first community actions will be a local litter pick in both the Beachborough School Grounds and in Westbury, and we’re excited to get our high-vis jackets on and litter-pickers in hand and get out into the community to make a positive impact. If you’re a parent who would like to support in any way, we’d love to hear from you.

We also welcome ideas, suggestions, or specific knowledge from anyone in the school community. If you have expertise or interest in any of the 10 EcoSchools topics, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Mrs Caddick by email s.caddick@beachborough.com:

  1. Biodiversity
  2. Energy
  3. Global Citizenship
  4. Healthy Living
  5. Litter
  6. Marine
  7. School Grounds
  8. Transport
  9. Waste
  10. Water

Thank you for your support as we continue building a greener, more sustainable future for our school and beyond.

Club Maths

On Monday 28th April, we welcomed Scott from The Happy Puzzle Company, to lead Club Maths for those in FIII-FVII.

In their respective Clubs, our Beachburians had 1 hour to work together to complete a series of maths challenges. These included colour coded jigsaws, tube connection challenges, creating road maps with a logical route, and even balancing 24 penguins on a moving iceberg, using just their little fingers!

The children had a fabulous afternoon, putting teamwork, perseverance and their communication skills to the test, however, it was Carder who came out on top!

Well done to all of the children who took part.

PP1 Visit the British Motor Museum

What an exhilarating day we had at the British Motor Museum! From the moment we arrived, the children were buzzing with excitement. One of the highlights was our immersive experience on a 102-year-old Victorian bus. Dressed as the gentry from that era, the children truly got a taste of history while travelling in style.

Once inside the museum, we delved into the fascinating world of the very first cars. The children learned about how they came into production and were particularly captivated by the story of Lady Benz. Unlike her husband, Mr Benz, who had a few mishaps behind the wheel, Lady Benz managed to drive without a hitch!

We also explored the materials that went into building those early vehicles, giving the children a real insight into the innovation of the time. They marvelled at how steam engines paved the way for the aerodynamic design of modern racing cars.

Throughout the day, I couldn’t help but be proud of the children’s behaviour. They were inquisitive, engaged, and displayed remarkable knowledge about the topics discussed, all while showing fantastic manners. It was a memorable trip that sparked curiosity in the world of motoring history!

Spratton Hall Athletics Meeting

On Tuesday, the first athletics meeting of the season took place at Spratton Hall School. It involved 6 teams – Spratton A and B, Bilton Grange, Maidwell Hall, Swanbourne House and ourselves – competing in 6 different track events (70 or 75m Hurdles, 100 metres, 200 metres, 300 metres – Year 8 only, 800 metres and the 4×100 relays) as well as four field disciplines (Long Jump, High Jump, Shot -Years 6 to 8 and Cricket Ball Throw – Year 5 only).

Our team, on the back of only having one PE lesson and a lunch time practice session, acquitted themselves brilliantly with a number of stand out individual performances across each of the events. A special mention to our Year 5 competitors, who are considerably less experienced in athletic competition in comparison to the older age groups (with a number making their debut for the school). We finished 3rd in the girls’ competition overall and won the boys’ equivalent – a fantastic achievement amongst some stiff competition – with Edward C, the captain, collecting the trophy on the team’s behalf. We also finished runners up overall, to Spratton Hall A, when the boys and girls’ scores were combined together.

The Results are in…

Congratulations must go to Max G-S for scoring 56 not out in the 1st XI cricket match against St Hugh’s!

Aylesbury Rugby Festival

On Sunday, Morgan, Henry, Josh, and Harry represented Buckingham U11 (Ninjas) in the Aylesbury Rugby Festival.

They all had a fabulous afternoon, and certainly did their team proud – well done!

St. Edward’s Cricket Festival

The U10 girls enjoyed a very successful afternoon at the St. Edward’s Cricket Festival. They won their first two matches and lost by just one run to The Dragon in their last game.  At the presentation, Leila and Maggie were rewarded for their super efforts in batting and bowling.
