“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela’s profound words remind us that the power of education extends far beyond the classroom. It shapes not just our knowledge, but also our capacity for growth, imagination, and resilience. In today’s digital age, however, we are faced with a growing challenge in our educational approach, one that involves balancing technology with personal development. As smartphones become increasingly ubiquitous, the idea of a smartphone-free childhood may seem counterintuitive. Yet, as I discovered earlier this week, it is essential to consider how early smartphone use could potentially hinder the educational and emotional growth of children.

At the start of the week, I had the pleasure of joining a webinar hosted by Clare Fernyhough, where we discussed the implications of smartphone use on a child’s development. Clare, a mother of two and a psychologist, is a passionate advocate for protecting children from the overwhelming impact of smartphones on their mental health. She shared how many parents are caught in a dilemma, on one hand, they want to keep their children connected, but on the other, they fear that denying smartphones could lead to their children being excluded by their peers.

Clare’s concerns are rooted in her research, which highlights the detrimental effects smartphones can have on children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. So alarmed by the negative consequences, she, alongside a fellow mother, launched the “Smartphone-Free Childhood” campaign. The campaign encourages parents to refrain from giving their children smartphones until they turn 15.

During the webinar, Clare emphasised that while smartphones are undeniably beneficial in many ways, they can disrupt key aspects of childhood development. The constant exposure to rapid information, digital distractions, and social media overwhelms young minds. Children are not fully equipped to process this constant flood of stimuli, leading to difficulties in focusing, disrupted sleep patterns, and heightened anxiety. Furthermore, the abundance of smartphones results in fewer face-to-face interactions, which are critical for children to learn social cues, empathy, and emotional regulation.

As Nelson Mandela’s quote reminds us, education is not just about knowledge, but about shaping the whole individual. A smartphone-free childhood is an investment in a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive growth. It provides the mental space for children to grow, explore, and develop a strong sense of self, free from the overwhelming demands of the digital world.

Of course, the goal is not to demonise technology. In today’s world, balance is key. It is not about rejecting technology entirely, but about finding the right time and place for it in children’s development. Supporting a smartphone-free childhood, can allow children to develop the resilience and creativity necessary for their long-term success.

If you would like to learn more about Clare Fernyhough’s work and the Smartphone-Free Childhood campaign, I encourage you to explore the webinar slides below. You might also find Channel 4’s documentary, Swiped, an insightful resource on the effects of digital technology on young people.

Enjoy a relaxing weekend,

I’m a Boarder… Get Me Out of Here! – A Night of Teamwork, Challenge, and Bugs!

What an evening! The sports hall was transformed into the ultimate jungle adventure as we took on the “I’m a Boarder… Get Me Out of Here!” survival challenge. From the moment we started, the air was buzzing with excitement (and maybe a few nervous giggles) as teams prepared to battle it out for the title of Kings and Queens of the Jungle!

Throughout the night, we faced a series of wild and wacky challenges that put our teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test. Each task demanded communication and strategy, as we worked together to solve puzzles and tackle some seriously tricky team challenges.

Of course, no jungle adventure would be complete without the ultimate test of courage—THE BUG EATING CHALLENGE! As the final trial of the night, brave boarders stepped up to sample some unusual jungle delicacies. With faces ranging from determined to downright horrified, we cheered each other on as crunchy critters were bravely chomped down. A true test of jungle spirit!

At the end of the night, there could only be one winning team, who proved themselves the ultimate jungle survivors. Huge congratulations to our crowned Kings and Queens of the Jungle! But in reality, every boarder was a winner, whether it was through solving a tricky puzzle, stepping out of their comfort zone, or just having an unforgettable time with friends.

A massive thank you to John from Elite Survival for putting together such an incredible evening. His enthusiasm, energy, and fantastic challenges made the event an unforgettable experience for everyone.

U11 Bee Netball MK Tournament

On Wednesday afternoon, our U11 Colts A team netball players were hosted by MKPS, where we participated in a tournament with five other teams. Our first two matches were incredibly tough, resulting in losses. However, undeterred, and aware that maintaining a positive attitude is essential in tournament play, we approached our next two matches with determination and excellent teamwork.

We won both matches, demonstrating that our training and experience this season have helped us develop into a strong team with solid skills. Our final match was a close one, but we lost, placing us 4th overall—just short of the podium!

Unfortunately, this week, Tilly E was injured and unable to play. However, she took on the role of an excellent ‘team manager’—thank you, Tilly! A big thank you also to all the parents who came to support us

What a gloriously sunny afternoon filled with competitive netball—well done!

Congratulating Evelyn

Evelyn B (FV) competed for Sport Karate Academy at the Murayama Cup in Gloucester last weekend. The competition was tough with 28 teams from all over England and Wales taking part. Evelyn fought hard, achieving bronze in Kumite Under 155cm, 6-4 kyu category, contributing to her squad finishing 3rd over all.

Congratulations, Evelyn. Beachborough are very proud of your achievement!

National Cross Country Championships

The annual National Prep Schools Cross Country Championships took place last Sunday at Malvern College in Worcestershire. There was great excitement amongst the Beachborough ranks as most of our runners were competing in the event for the first time and for our more experienced athletes like Josh S, Kit S and Jake T, it was their final chance to take part in this prestigious competition. With nearly 50 schools in attendance, the main challenge for our pupils lay in the sheer volume of competitors that they were up against. Each of our four teams, the U11 girls and boys and the U13 girls and boys, had trained very hard for the Nationals, regularly attending weekly training sessions on Thursday and Friday lunch times, not to mention some extra slots as the day grew closer.

In the U11 girls’ category, a team of Sophie L, Chloe L, Eva P and Darcey S all acquitted themselves well. Sophie, running up a year, was our first girl home in 65th, closely followed 7 seconds later by Chloe in 73rd (out of 176 runners) with Eva and Darcey behind them, giving the girls a final team position of 25th.

With the highest number of runners out of all four categories appearing in the U11 boys’ race (208 in total), our team of Fergus T, Arthur P and Max H-S (Willam G was also part of the team but was unable to run on the day due to illness) had their work cut out. However, these three individuals put all of their training to great effect with each of them running tremendously to finish a very creditable 20th (Fergus), 46th (Arthur) and 136th (Max – a year young). This all helped the boys to a healthy 17th placed team position overall.

The U13 girls’ competition, with a comparatively smaller group of runners (108 in total) compared to the other categories, like the previous two races, was fiercely competitive. With a team of Year 7 girls all running up, Jenna S was our first girl home followed in by Gracie R, Theodora S and Eliza B; all four having shown great improvement in their running this year. Their 20th place finish in the team standings is something to build on for next year.

The final race of the afternoon was the U13 boys, and was arguably the toughest in terms of how competitive it was with several superb runners on show. It certainly brought the best out of our team with Joshua S coming in 3rd (out of 153 runners) and ultimately gaining a place on the podium; a truly magnificent achievement when you consider the competition he was up against with athletes from the powerhouses of Millfield Prep, Sedbergh Prep and Cheam to name but a few. He was ably supported by Kit S (37th), Liam H (92nd – a year young) and Jake T (118th), with their collective efforts enabling the team to finish in the top 10 in the country.

The Nationals is always one of my personal sporting highlights of the year as there is always great camaraderie amongst the Beachborough team and contingent of parents who come to watch. Last Sunday was no different! It also provides our pupils with a chance to compete on a national scale; an experience that will live with them for the rest of their school career. I would like to place on record my thanks to all of our runners who have given everything to the school’s cross country programme over the past two terms, and to Mr Blee for his invaluable help and support which made last Sunday a memorable day for our school.

Wade Gymnastics Competition

Last weekend, several of our Beachburians attended the Wade Gymnastics competition, which resulted in many medals!

In the year 3 and 4 category, Beachborough entered 2 teams. Team 1, made up of Hermione S, Cressida L-W, Elodie G, Evie E and Scarlett S came second place, with Hermione winning individual 1st place for vault and 2nd place for combined vault and floor routine. Evie won 2nd place for her floor routine. It was such an exciting morning and all the girls worked so hard and did a wonderful job of representing Beachborough. Congratulations, girls!

A Staffing Update

We would like to make you aware that Laura Morle (PP2) will be leaving Beachborough at the end of this academic year. Laura, along with her partner Gwilym, is making an exciting move to Switzerland where they will be taking on the role of houseparents in the Senior Boarding House at La Garenne International School, in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. Thank you to Wychwood School for the thoughtful invite.

Pancake Day 2025!

On Tuesday 4th March, Beachborough Prep celebrated Pancake Day with some obligatory races!

Our youngest learners were first up to the start line, and did a tremendous job of showing our older children how it’s done! The camaraderie was wonderful to witness, and the pupils cheered each other on as they raced around the track, flipping their pancakes as they went.

A huge well done to all who took part!

U11 Netball vs Ashfold

The U11B team enjoyed a tremendous win against Ashfold in the sunshine on Wednesday, conceding just one goal. The quality of netball was superb – the best so far this season – and it was great to see the progression of some girls who have moved up into the team as a result of their continued hard work and determination to improve. Well done girls!

Introducing the Welcome Bench!

Mrs Crook, our Nurture and Wellbeing Practitioner, has brought another wonderful idea to life, in the form of a ‘Welcome Bench’.

The Welcome Bench has been designed for students who may want some time alone to reflect, read a book, or just need a quiet space to think. It’s a spot where they can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the playground, and if they’re in need of a chat or a friendly conversation, someone can join them. The Welcome Bench is there for children to feel comfortable and supported, whether they’re enjoying some time on their own or looking to connect with someone nearby.

The Welcome Bench, also known as ‘Calm Corner’, is situated on the Front Terrace and sits alongside an olive tree, which is a nod to ‘extending an olive branch’ to somebody. Our Wellbeing Ambassadors, along with Arnie, our Wellbeing Dog, were some of the first to test out this lovely initiative, and we’re certain that it’ll prove popular among our caring Beachborough community.

Thank you to Mrs Crook and the Beachborough Friends Committee for making this possible.

Mr Blithe’s Co-curricular Club

A fantastic day for the U13 boys’ hockey team at the IAPS regionals

The 1st VII boys’ hockey team had a memorable day at the IAPS regionals held at Bedford School, finishing their season on a high by winning the Plate competition.

The tournament began with a tough group stage, where the team narrowly lost to Bishop’s Stortford (1-2) and Wellesley School (0-2). However, they bounced back strongly with an impressive 3-0 victory over St Hugh’s, securing a place in the Plate competition.

In the Plate knockout rounds, the boys showed great determination and resilience. They battled past Witham Hall with a thrilling golden goal finish, securing a 1-0 win. The semi-final against The Dragon was another intense match, with the team once again triumphing in golden goal, winning 2-1.

The final was a rematch against St Hugh’s, and the boys delivered a dominant performance, securing a 3-0 victory to claim the Plate title. Their teamwork, perseverance, and skill shone throughout the day, making it a truly fantastic experience for all involved.

Winning the Plate was a perfect way to end the season, and the boys should be incredibly proud of their efforts. It was a day filled with excitement, determination, and well-deserved success.

World Book Day 2025!

On Thursday 6th March, we celebrated World Book Day. The children and staff of Beachborough truly took World Book Day by storm, and came to school dressed as their favourite fictional book characters. Those in FV-FVIII were encouraged to decorate a plain T-shirt in a way that also reflects their favourite book, and we were astounded by everybody’s efforts.

On Wednesday 5th March, we were also lucky enough to welcome award-winning author, Lucy Strange, to Beachborough. Lucy spoke to children in FIII-FVIII about where she gets her inspiration from, tips and tricks to writing their own stories, and the all-important process of how she develops her fantastic books. The session concluded with an opportunity for our children to create their own stories, using a variety of locations and characters provided by Lucy, followed by an insightful Q&A. A huge thank you to Lucy for being such an inspiration to our Beachburians.

U9 Netball Tournament at St. Hugh’s

The U9 A netball team played great netball in the sunshine on Tuesday. It was great to see how well the girls have progressed over the season. The A team played 4 matches against teams from St Hugh’s, Winchester House and Pinewood. Beachborough A team had a great afternoon winning all their games and finishing in 1st place for their tournament. Great netball was played from Cressida L-W, Hermionie S, Lily R, Elodie G and Lara T.

The U9 B netball team played well at St Hugh’s finishing 3rd in their tournament. They easily won 3 games and lost 2 games by only 1 goal. We are so proud of their progress and in particular the accuracy of their shooting.

The U9 C netball team played brilliantly too at St Hugh’s. They came 2nd in their tournament winning most of their matches. They have also played really well over the season.

Stay & Read and Sunflower Seeds!

It has been an exciting week in the Boardman, with ‘Stay & Read’ sessions taking place on Tuesday and Thursday for Nursery, Kindergarten, and Reception classes. This was a fabulous opportunity for our parents to stay a little longer at drop-off, and read a variety of books with their children in a relaxed environment. Thank you to all who came along!

On Wednesday, Reception made the most of the glorious sunshine and planted their own sunflowers! Before heading outside, they learnt all about sunflower seeds and the growing process, which was followed by the individual planting of their own seed.

Over the coming months, the children will observe the growth of their sunflowers, with an opportunity to take them home once they’ve reached their full potential. Well done, Reception!
