Head Teacher

Head’s Blog

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” Martin Luther King, Jr.

At the heart of Beachborough is a firm belief that every child’s voice matters. When young people are given opportunities to express their views, make decisions, and see their choices valued, they grow not only in confidence but also in their sense of responsibility and engagement.

This is why I am particularly excited about our upcoming Enrichment Week, where the theme will be “Your Voice Matters.” Throughout the week, the children will be encouraged to exercise their right to choose the activities they wish to participate in, truly embodying the spirit of pupil voice in action.

On Monday, Mr Gross led an engaging assembly introducing the range of exciting options available. From adventurous activities like tree climbing, to immersive experiences such as a mock magistrate court, a visit from a planetarium, and even the opportunity to be Head for the Day! These options have been carefully selected to cater for a broad range of interests and to stimulate curiosity and creativity.

As Mr Gross mentioned during his assembly, it is important that the children vote for the activities they most want to experience. This process is more than just a ballot, it is an opportunity for them to practise making considered decisions, to experience democracy in action, and to feel empowered by seeing their choices respected and enacted.

The outcomes we anticipate are significant. Children will develop greater independence, a stronger sense of agency, and a deeper understanding of the importance of their own contributions to the school community. They will also learn to appreciate the value of making informed choices, collaborating with peers, and respecting the voice of others. But most of all, we hope the children will experience the joy that comes from knowing that their opinions and preferences matter.

I am looking forward to seeing the results of the children’s votes and working with the child who is voted Head for the Day. I hope they take it easy on the staff and don’t implement any radical new policies, like replacing Maths lessons with Minecraft!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

Simone

A Staffing Update

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Susan Caddick (our current Head of Science) as our new Head of Boarding, starting in September 2025.

Mrs Caddick will be joined at Beachborough by her husband, Graham, and their two children, Frank (aged 10) and Sophie (aged 7).

During the recruitment process, Mrs Caddick impressed the selection panel with her child-centred approach, warmth, and her clear vision for creating a true “home away from home” boarding experience. She is passionate about maintaining the continuity of our current provision, while ensuring that fun remains at the heart of boarding life.

Mrs Caddick will begin familiarising herself with the boarding community this evening, as she meets the boarders during their Spy Games experience. Over the remainder of the term, she will also be a regular visitor to the Boarding House in the evenings, getting to know the children and their routines.

There will be an opportunity for parents to meet Mrs Caddick before the end of term, and we will share further details in due course.

We are very excited to welcome the Caddick family to Beachborough and look forward to the wonderful contributions Mrs Caddick will bring to our boarding community.

Mark Usher will be leaving Beachborough at the end of the Autumn Term 2025, following 12 years of dedicated service as our Director of Sport.

Mark has been a vital part of school life, and his commitment, expertise, and care have had a lasting impact on countless children throughout his time with us. His passion for sport, and the encouragement he has given to so many pupils will not be forgotten.

Mark will be embarking on an exciting new adventure as a Boarding House Parent, alongside his wife, at Hatherop Castle. While we are very sad to see him leave, we are thrilled for him and his family as they begin this new chapter.

Mark will be greatly missed by all at Beachborough. I know you will join me in warmly thanking him for everything he has contributed to our community and in wishing him and his family every success and happiness in their new role.

We have already begun the process of recruiting his successor.

Form III go to Cuffley!

Last week, Form III set off on an adventure to Cuffley Active Learning Centre. They were ready and eager to go and luckily the weather was on our side! We arrived and quickly set up base in the sunshine in our tents. After a picnic and a quick game of football… we set off for our first activity of low ropes and fire building. The children worked hard to support one another and collaborated brilliantly in each activity. Later, the children took part in some more high adrenaline activities including archery and zipline flying through the woods! Once back at camp, we had a disco in the sunshine including a full year group conga and several children learnt to master the worm! We settled in for a tasty dinner and then a campfire was set up with smores for dessert. The children were fantastic campers and looked after one another through the night ready for another fun packed day of more activities before returning home, a little tired but having had a fantastic time! All the staff commented on how brilliant the Form III’s were, and they showed themselves to be true Beachburians with their resilience, empathy, and collaboration.

Beachborough vs Swanbourne

Beachborough Third XI  had a convincing win against Swanbourne this week in a T15 fixture. Set only 64 to win after some fantastic bowling and fielding from the whole team, Keegan and Jake reached the total in the sixth over. Special mentions must go to Freddie for a maiden over, Jack for great captaincy, and Liam for fielding a superb run out. Tobey was player of the match for a great catch and two wickets in one over.

Mr Gross

A Sporting Opportunity for Josh…

On Wednesday 13th May, Josh S in Form VIII and a member of the West Bromwich Albion academy, had the wonderful opportunity to play in a club match against Walsall Academy on the main pitch at the Hawthorns Stadium. The final score was 7-0 (although the game was closer than the result suggests) and Josh scored a lovely goal.

A very well done, Josh!

Form IV Viking Day

On Monday, a fearsome party of Form IV Vikings set sail from Norway to embark on a raid on Lindisfarne off the Northumbrian coast. The band of warriors prepared their longboats for the journey ensuring that their boats were well stocked, their dragon heads were ready to scare off any spirits and the sails were fitted correctly. The Vikings designed and made their own Thor’s hammer necklace to protect themselves on the raid. After successfully raiding the monastery on Holy Island, the Vikings set sail with their treasures, including bracelets, rings, arm rings and crowns made of the finest gold, silver and bronze. A successful raid was had by all and there is potential that some may return to settle in the area known as Danelaw.

Mr Jackson

The Results are in…

Many congratulations to Evie W in Form VIII, who has scored consecutive 50’s for the U13A girls’ cricket team in the last couple of school matches against both Swanbourne House (7th May) and Bilton Grange (14th May).

PP2 go to Hill End!

Pre-Prep 2 had a fantastic two days on their residential to Hill End. The children were buzzing with excitement before we even arrived and couldn’t wait to see their dorm for the night. Once we arrived, the children were able to have a run around in the sunshine before having a picnic lunch. We then walked up to the woods, to learn important survival skills. The children had a go at fire lighting and den building, which required teamwork and perseverance. The dens then had a test when Storm Tongue hit (Mrs Tongue with a bucket of water!) to see how waterproof our dens really were. In the evening, we had a delicious BBQ and later had songs and s’mores around the campfire. It was so lovely to hear laughter and chatter around the fire. Once bedtime arrived, the children had hot chocolate and a story to start settling down for the night. On Thursday, we had more fun activities, which involved working together as a team and understanding the importance of communication, perseverance, resilience and teamwork. The children demonstrated these skills perfectly and it was so lovely to hear children encouraging and cheering on their peers.  To end our lovely residential, we had a very sleepy bus ride back to school.

Well done and thank you PP2 for such a brilliant time together!

Also, a big thank you to Mrs Tongue, Miss Kingsley, Miss Smith and Mr Blee for coming along and supporting the children.

The Oxford Maths Festival

On Sunday, I was lucky enough to spend the day with my Dad at the Maths Institute in Oxford attending The Oxford Maths Festival.  This event is a mix of all the wonderful things that make up the world of maths.  I was able to take part in a wide range of exciting events from talks and shows to brilliant board games and puzzles.

There was a massive variety of games to play including Dragon Games, Sudoku and Prime Climb. The most fun of all was City of Zombies.  This is where players take turns to roll 3 Battle Dice, they can then add, subtract, multiply and divide dice together to build incredible attack combinations in an attempt to take out as many Zombies as possible.  I had the opportunity to play against Maths PhD students from Oxford University. I found them to be kind and very eager to share their strategies. Like me, they love maths!

I went to quite a few talks, which took place in large lecture theatres.  My favourite was ‘How to Expect the Unexpected’ with Professor Kit Yates. This talk explored and examined the challenges of prediction in an uncertain world. There were discussions on biases and how these can lead to errors, such as underestimating the rapid spread of disease or failing to see the urgency of the climate crisis.  The talk covered practical tools to help us navigate the unpredictable world we live in.

I also enjoyed The Cunning Maths Show. This covered so many different topics such as why clocks are weird and why the Romans were rubbish at maths. This was hosted by Barney Maunder-Taylor – he has a double first in maths from Oxford University, is a former Champion of Countdown, is a previous winner of Bournemouth & Poole Children’s Entertainer Of The Year (Dorset) and still holds the title of Jester of Bournemouth. I found him to be really interesting and he was very passionate about sharing the hidden maths in our everyday lives.

It was a long but exciting day, and so much fun! I would definitely recommend this maths festival to Beachborough students in the future.  In fact, this would make a brilliant school trip next year!

Report by Josh C FVI

On Sunday 11 May, Henry attended the Oxford Maths Festival, hosted at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford.  Along with dozens of other Maths whiz-kids aged 5-13, Henry participated in workshops, puzzles, and creative maths challenges such as Origami, Mobius strips, and 3-dimensional Sudoku. All the activities were guided by Oxford University Maths students, who shared their passion for maths in so much of daily life.  In one cube construction challenge, Henry found a solution that non-one else had discovered, and the university students gathered round to take photos.  It was inspiring to be surrounded by so much brainpower, and Henry’s dad needed a little rest at the end of it all!

Report by the Alp Family

Thank you, Josh (VI) and Henry (IV) for sharing your experiences. What an incredible opportunity to explore maths in an inspiring environment.

Beachborough vs MK Prep

The Colts Girls A and B teams played their second hard ball cricket match at home against a strong MK Prep this week. The girls showed great enthusiasm throughout the games, enjoying the opportunity to develop their batting, bowling and fielding skills.

Dr Wallersteiner Visits Beachborough!

On Wednesday, Dr Wallersteiner, Head of Stowe, came to Beachborough. Dr Wallersteiner’s visit consisted of seeing the recent developments at Beachborough through a tour of the school, and having the opportunity to meet our current FVII and FVIII children, who’re set to attend Stowe in 2025 or 2026.

The children were fully engaged in a Q&A session with Dr Wallersteiner, who was intrigued to learn of their interests and hobbies, and what they’re most looking forward to about joining Stowe. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to familiarise themselves with their future Headteacher, and we thank Dr Wallersteiner for taking the time to visit us.

Eco Committee Litter Pick

This week, our Eco Committee took part in a site-wide litter pick to help enhance our community space. Thanks to the hard work of our fantastic site team, the school grounds are already very clean, so pupils focused their efforts on less obvious areas, including the boarders’ spaces, under bushes, and in the Wildlife and Forest School areas. Armed with litter pickers, they enthusiastically set about improving their environment and making a positive impact. We’re now looking forward to extending this effort with a community litter pick in Westbury village before the end of term. A huge thank you to all the pupils who took part, and to the staff who supported the initiative: Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Franklin, Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Caddick, and Mrs. Cox.

Club Music Finals 2025

Club Music 2025 has been spectacular!

James Ramm, Director of Music at Malvern College, was a superb adjudicator, sharing positive comments and sound advice to all our performers and they were simply outstanding.

We had 400 performances from Forms III – VIII and these are the final results:
