We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children – Native American Proverb

This powerful proverb emphasises our duty to equip the next generation with the knowledge and skills to protect our planet. Teaching our children about sustainability is not just an option; it is a necessity. In a world where climate change and environmental challenges are becoming ever more pressing, at Beachborough, we take seriously our responsibility to instil eco-conscious values in the children. To this end, this year we are participating in the Eco Schools – Green Flag Programme, which will promote a sense of responsibility within the children allowing them to understand the impact of our actions on the environment.

We hope by participating in the Green Flag Programme there will be many benefits for the entire school community including a greener, healthier learning environment. The programme will encourage responsibility and teamwork through initiatives such as litter picking, recycling schemes, biodiversity projects, and energy-saving campaigns. The aim is that these initiatives will not only improve our school grounds but also our local community. Additionally, by embedding sustainability into daily school life, we will cultivate a culture of environmental awareness, inspiring everyone to be proactive in preserving our planet for future generations.

To ensure that sustainability remains a core value at Beachborough, we have appointed Mrs Susan Caddick as our Sustainability Coordinator, she will oversee the school’s green initiatives and help embed eco-consciousness into all aspects of school life. As pupil voice is at the heart of all our initiatives, we have established a Green Council these passionate children will lead projects, raise awareness, and drive meaningful change within our community.

We are actively working towards achieving our Green Flag accreditation by September. This will be a significant milestone that will recognise Beachborough’s dedication to sustainability and empower the children to be environmental ambassadors for the future.

On Tuesday, Form VI enjoyed an exciting STEAM Day with the inspiring theme of Oceans. Throughout the day, they explored the wonders of Science, Computing, Art, and TED through hands-on activities that combined creativity, problem-solving, and real-world applications. In Science, they investigated Cartesian Divers, exploring the principles of pressure, and experimented with sodium alginate beads to understand the chemistry behind polymers derived from seaweed. Art saw them experimenting with watercolours and salt to create striking ocean-inspired pieces including sea creatures! While in Computing, they delved into game design using “Fuze,” crafting interactive digital experiences. Meanwhile, in TED, pupils transformed ocean plastic into unique pendants, reinforcing the importance of sustainability and innovation in design. The energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity shown by Form VI was superb. A huge thank you to Mrs Blithe, Mrs Caddick, Mrs Cox and Mrs Hodgkinson, Mrs Parsons and Mrs Oram for their organisation and inspiring activities.

Mr Charlie Ross (also known as the grandfather of Zac in Form IV) visited on Tuesday to give a talk to Form IV about writing an autobiography. Charlie, one of our best-loved television personalities, wrote his autobiography Sold! last year. The book recounts his life so far and is filled with fascinating behind-the-scenes insights and delightful stories, from school days to the saleroom. A huge thank you to Charlie for visiting us and sharing his wisdom!

As we reach the end of a busy and fulfilling half term, it is hard to believe how quickly the time has passed! I hope you all have the opportunity to rest, recharge, and enjoy some time with family and friends.

Wishing you all a wonderful half term!

Cothill School U12 and U11 Rugby 7s Competition

For the first time in the school’s history, we entered both an U12 and U11 side into the annual Cothill Rugby 7s competition. This tends to attract a wide pool of schools, with this year being no different as last Saturday, Beachborough were up against 11 other teams taking part, most of whom are playing rugby as their major sport this term. Each team was placed into a group of four; Farleigh, Cheam and Summer Fields B being placed into our pool.

The first game against Farleigh looked tough on paper and so it proved on the pitch. That being said, the boys started well and had the opposition camped in their own half for much of the first period. Relentless pressure led to number of eye catching tries; Fergus T’s arguably being the best of the bunch. Despite a late rally from Farleigh, we secured a comfortable win in terms of the scoreline (25-5) to get our tournament off to a promising start.

The team followed this up in the second game with a hard fought win over a talented Cheam side, scoring 3 unanswered tries. The clinical nature in which our tries were scored ultimately made all of the difference as we were certainly asked questions by the opposition. 2 wins from 2 games became 3 from 3 with victory in our final group game against Summer Fields B which despite a less than perfect start, we found our level to beat them 25-5.

As a result of topping our group, we were placed into another group of 3 for the afternoon and faced the winners of the other pools; Sunningdale and Summer Fields. From this point on the boys were simply unbelievable. In sport you talk about the need to step your game up and bring that extra flair, quality, precision and clinical touch which you hope will make the difference. To put it quite simply – the team showed this in abundance! Some of our attacking play was a joy to behold and it rounded off a superb afternoon as after winning both of these final games in which we played, we were the overall champions in the U11 age group category.

Although undoubtedly a team effort, a special mention must go to Leo S who was voted as Beachborough’s player of the tournament. Unfortunately, Leo broke his leg in our final game against Summer Fields, a mere 30 seconds from the end of the whole competition. He had, up to that point, enjoyed a superb festival with his elusive running style, scoring a number of tries in the process. He also showed huge bravery in the aftermath of the incident in which he sustained his injury and our thoughts and prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.

My sincere thanks go to the huge volume of Beachborough parents who supported their sons and the team in action. We were easily the best supported school there and without question the most vocal! To the boys themselves – well done for an excellent tournament! You were superb on and off the pitch displaying all of the qualities and hallmarks that we seek in aspiring sportsmen – skilful, resolute and competitive in the matches and then humble, respectful and courteous in the praise that came your way.

Maths and Science Olympiad at Caldicott

Eliza B, Ian D, Arabella H-S and Ben S represented Beachborough this year at the Caldicott Olympiad. After a warm greeting by Caldicott’s head, Mr Jeremy Banks (former Beachborough headmaster), 6 teams began three rounds of exciting maths problem solving. Ben, Arabella, Ian and Eliza demonstrated strong collaboration and communication skills and worked admirably as a cohesive team to work out each problem. One round involved racing around the hall to collect and give answers, and Ian was very speedy around the track for our team! The afternoon involved a science experiment necessitating careful and precise measuring and timing, followed by a fairly rapid fire science quiz. Whilst not the winners this year, our Beachborough representatives did themselves and the school proud; they took everything in their stride, persevered and gave each activity their very best effort. It was a thoroughly enjoyable, and very tiring, day!

Introducing the New Boarding Council

We are delighted to announce the formation of our brand-new Boarding Council, a dedicated group of pupils committed to making boarding life the best it can be! This initiative brings together representatives from all year groups, ensuring that every boarder’s voice is heard. The council will be led by our senior boarders, who will take on leadership roles in running meetings, gathering feedback, and working on initiatives to enhance our boarding experience.

One of their first priorities will be acting on the feedback from our most recent pupil survey. While we all know that boarding in Kites is already fantastic, there’s always room for improvement! The council will be looking at ways to refine routines, introduce new activities, and strengthen our community spirit even further.

A huge thank you to all the pupils stepping up to be part of this team, your commitment and enthusiasm are truly appreciated. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of your work and making boarding life even more enjoyable for everyone.

Stay tuned for updates from the Boarding Council in future newsletters!

Form III, Reporting for BBC News!

In Form III’s English lessons, we have been recounting our learning on the Roman invasion of Britain in the form of some professional news reports. This week, we created a greenscreen in the classroom and with the help of a little CGI we have filmed our news reports live from the studio! The children are absolutely thrilled with their work and we will be moving on to write a persuasive letter to convince a real news presenter to come and speak to us.

The results are in…

Oundle School visit Beachborough Prep

On Wednesday, Miss Dorman, Prep School Liaison and Chemistry teacher from Oundle School, came to visit.

Miss Dorman did an experiment consisting of fizzing Vitamin C tablets in water, which made the lids pop off film cannisters. They were pretty explosive! FV pupils then investigated the size of tablet as their variable, and timed how long it took for the cannister to explode. All very exciting and lots of squeals of joy when they popped!

We extend our thanks to Miss Dorman for leading an exciting lesson.

The Young Enterprise Valentine’s Gift Shop

Last week, we announced that the Young Enterprise would be running their Valentine’s Gift Shop throughout this week. Unsurprisingly, it proved to be very popular, and the team did an incredible job of selling their hand-crafted gifts.

We are thrilled to announce that they raised £105.50 for Mary’s Meals! Well done, everybody.

FVI STEAM Day

On Tuesday 11th February, our FVI children took part in another exciting STEAM Day.

The theme this time was ‘Oceans’, and the children delved into a plethora of stimulating and engaging activities throughout the day.

In Science and Maths, all pupils successfully worked in their teams on ocean-themed practicals. They looked at pressure on divers and made their own Cartesian Divers. They explored the wonders of products from the oceans, creating alginate worms from a chemical that is found in seaweed. These experiments developed the pupils’ ability to plan investigations, discuss variables, and record and analyse data – all of which are key skills for our budding Scientists and Mathematicians!

In Technology, they used recovered plastic from the oceans, melting and repurposing it into jewellery and other items, illustrating how some good can come from this waste. The children melted bottle tops and other shredded plastic in a panini press, before manipulating it into a sheet that was then pressed flat. They designed pendant shapes, or a shape of their choice, which was cut out using the electric saw and made into a necklace or pin badge.

In Computing, the children dived into the world of game development using FUZE on the Nintendo Switch, transforming their ideas into interactive experiences. They built their first game step by step, learning how each line of code shapes the gameplay. Engaged throughout, they predicted outcomes of modifications, sparking curiosity and problem-solving skills. As confidence grew, they tackled more advanced exciting projects, providing a fun reward for the hard work.

Art saw their creativity shine, when they had the chance to make beautiful ocean scenes from watercolour and salt. All in all, it was a fantastic day for everyone involved – a huge thank you to all of the staff who made it happen.

Easter Baking in Food Technology

In Food Tech this week, our children have been making delicious Easter-themed treats. Our FVI children created ‘Oreo Dirt Cake’, thoughtfully decorated with a selection of sweets and chocolate.

In FV, they made rice crispy Easter eggs, and had fun experimenting with icing!

Show and Share

This week, we enjoyed our PP1 – FIV Show and Share events. There was a very genuine joy and delightful hubbub in each classroom as children proudly showed parents their learning in their books and their learning environment.

“If we succeed in giving the love of learning, the learning itself is sure to follow.” John Lubbock

There is great significance in children actively sharing their learning experiences with their parents. When children see that their parents are genuinely interested in their learning, it further fosters a positive attitude towards school and learning. This positive reinforcement motivates children to engage more actively, as they feel a sense of accomplishment when sharing their efforts with their parents.

Thank you for joining us and sharing in your child’s incredible efforts, learning and thinking so far this year. It was a wonderful way to end a fruitful half term and cement a sense of accomplishment!

Our New Eco-Committee!

We are thrilled to announce that a team of 35 children in FIV-FVI have formed our brand new Eco-Committee and, collectively, will be introducing many green initiatives throughout the school.

The children will be working towards obtaining the Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation, which will be a testament to their dedication in actively engaging with ongoing environmental issues, and their strong desire to protect our planet.

We can’t wait to go on this exciting journey with them, and discover how they plan to make a positive difference to our school, local community, and beyond!

The Naughty Nought!

Some Form V pupils were shocked when they arrived at their maths lesson on Thursday, because the NAUGHTY NOUGHT had caused chaos in the classroom! He had hidden maths books, written messages on desks, thrown pens around the classroom, put the maths division teddy bear in the pilot seat of the Explorer aeroplane, and muddled all the worksheets for the lesson!

Oh no! I can’t believe the Naughty Nought is making us write on our desks! Where has he hidden our maths books?

Pupils had to spend the lesson completing their long multiplication calculations on the desks!

Congratulations to Mrs Gross’s maths set for being determined to show the Naughty Nought that they can solve challenging long multiplication calculations, with good presentation and accuracy, even if they don’t have their maths exercise books to write in! Let’s hope Mrs Gross can find the maths books over half-term.

Leila and Miller’s Fundraising Efforts

To celebrate Chinese New Year, Leila and Miller have a family tradition. Grandma collects coins and offers children to dip into the bag and grab a handful of coins and tokens. If you get a 5 token you get a £5 note, if you get a 10 token you can exchange it for a £10 note and then you add your tokens and coins together.

This year, Leila and Miller chose to donate some of their Chinese New Year money to our school charity, Mary’s Meals. They have bought their mugs in this week.

Thank you very much for your kind donation of £38.30. This will provide a vitamin enriched mug of porridge, for a whole year, to TWO PUPILS at our sponsored school, Nthola Primary.

Our special Mary’s Meals coin collecting mugs can be brought into school, at any time, from now until the end June.

Thank you for your continued support with raising money for our sponsored school in Malawi.

World Book Day: Thursday 6th March 2025

After half term, we have the privilege of welcoming award-winning author, Lucy Strange.

Lucy’s books capture elements of classic children’s literature in a style that is engaging and accessible for today’s younger readers. Often inspired by folklore and fairy tales, Lucy combines historical settings with touches of magic and fantasy to create utterly convincing worlds in which anything might happen…

You can find out more about Lucy’s books by visiting her website, here: Lucy Strange. She will be glad to sign your books on the day!

Mr Blee’s Half Marathon for Mary’s Meals…

On Sunday 27th April, Mr Blee will be running the Shakespeare Half Marathon, all in aid of raising money for Mary’s Meals!

Mr Blee has set a generous target of £1,000, which will feed 52 pupils at our sponsored primary school for a whole year. We have no doubt that you will join us in supporting him along the way, and we are wishing him the best of luck for April.

We have created a JustGiving page, if you wish to kindly donate: JUSTGIVING PAGE

Thank you so much for your generosity!

The Swanbourne Chase

On Thursday 13th February, our U11 and U13 boys and girls’ cross country teams competed in the annual Swanbourne Chase. A strong field of 12 schools assembled for the event on a challenging, undulating course which tested the runners’ stamina and resolve to the limit.

A typically strong and gutsy run from William G in the U11 boys’ race, who led from start to finish, set the tone for the afternoon with Fergus T in hot pursuit finishing not far behind him in 4th. These two boys’ efforts, and those of George D (26th), Max H-S (34th) and Kit K (53rd), enabled the U11 team to finish 4th overall. The U11 girls were led home by Chloe L in 11th place with Maggie J (29th), Tilly E (33rd) and Evelyn B (38th) making up that team and allowing them to finish 6th overall in the team standings.

In the U13 boys’ race, Josh S continued his fine individual form as after winning the Beachborough Run for the third successive year back in December, he followed up by finishing 1st in the Swanbourne event. Kit S ran a superb race to claim the silver medal and complete a memorable 1-2 for Beachborough. Alex H (21st ) and Jake T’s (24th)  finishing places meant the boys ended as runners up to Spratton Hall in the team standings. Finally, a quartet of Gracie R (20th), Theodora S (23rd), Arabella H-S (29th), replacing the injured Jenna S at the last minute, and Eliza B (30th), all a year young, allowed the U13 girls to finish 7th overall. A really good showing from our teams, with our medallists taking centre stage. The National Prep Schools Cross Country Championships at Malvern lie in wait next after the half term break!

Form IV CityScape Night Lights

Form IV have spent the first half of term making LED CityScape Night Lights. First, they designed their buildings using many different tools on the laser cutting software, with some attempting a 3D effect as well. The base was made using a tenon saw and cut with mitre joints, and then they assembled their circuit using an LED strip light. The buildings were backed with a piece of frosted acrylic to give a beautiful soft light to the finished piece.

IAPS Swimming at King Henry VIII School

It was a great afternoon at the Swimming IAPS qualifying event at King Henry VIII School in Coventry, on Thursday. The Beachborough Swimming Team were amazing and did the school proud!

The U10 Girls relay team finished 4th in both their 4×25 medley and freestyle relays, the U11 Girls relay team finished 1st in both their 4×25 medley and freestyle relays, and the U11 Boys relay team finished 3rd in their 4×25 medley relay and 2nd in their 4×25 freestyle relay

The U10 Girls relay team included three swimmers from Form IV who swam up an age group – which was brilliant for them and the team. Well done Hermionie S, Scarlett B and Elodie G.

There were great swims from Dylan M in his 50m Backstroke, Leo B in his 50m Backstroke, Hermionie S in her 50m Butterfly, Ayla O in her 50m Butterfly, Katie J in her 50m Breaststroke, Ben S in his 50m Breaststroke, and Claire N in her 50m Freestyle.

The top performances of the afternoon for placing 1st in their individual events were from:
Eva P in the U11 Girls 50m Backstroke,
Isla R in the U11 Girls 25m Para Freestyle,
Archie T in the U11 Boys 50m Breaststroke and,
Beth J in the U13 Girls 50m Freestyle.
