Head Teacher

Head’s Blog

“The greatest gift you can give a child is a chance at a better life. That starts with an extraordinary school, a place where they are seen, believed in, and given the tools to soar” Oprah Winfrey

What an extraordinary week we have had at Beachborough! Enrichment Week 2025 has been nothing short of inspiring, and this year’s theme, “Your Voice Matters,” has come to life in the most imaginative and empowering ways.

We began the week with a wonderful show of confidence and leadership from the children who bravely put themselves forward for the role of Head for the Day. Each candidate presented their manifesto to their peers with clarity and passion. After careful consideration (and a school-wide vote), I am delighted to announce that Dougy H was elected! He will take up the mantle on 8th July, and I will be meeting with him shortly to see which parts of his manifesto we can bring to life. Rumour has it that we may be starting the day with a whole-school game of Capture the Flag, watch this space!

Monday evening brought the Summer Music Concert, and what a joy it was! From solo instrumentalists to ensembles, the standard of performance was simply outstanding. My hands were clapping, and my toes were tapping all the way through! Huge thanks to Mrs Chatfield and the entire music team for their dedication and expert guidance. The confidence and musicianship displayed by our pupils were a testament to a culture of creativity and support.

The children have taken part in an incredible range of enrichment activities, many of which they helped to choose themselves, staying true to our theme. One long-held dream came true for many, as they were finally allowed to climb the mighty beech tree on the front lawn, a moment filled with joy, determination, and just the right amount of adventure. Others spent time developing their freestyle football skills under the expert guidance of the Vice UK Champion, an inspiring and high-energy session that had everyone cheering. Meanwhile, another group stepped into the world of law and justice, taking part in a mock trial at a magistrates’ court, an experience that challenged their thinking, boosted their confidence, and sparked some excellent debate. These are just a few examples of the variety and richness of the opportunities on offer, and it’s been wonderful to see pupils so engaged, curious, and excited throughout the week. It has been a pleasure to watch the children step outside their usual routines, explore new interests, and have their voices heard. My heartfelt thanks to Mr Gross, who coordinated the entire week with brilliance and care.

Thursday saw the school buzz with energy for Club Challenge Day, which brought a fantastic mix of activities including scavenger hunts, circus skills, and of course, our much-loved Club Shout to round off the day. Thank you to all the club leaders for their creativity, energy, and unwavering enthusiasm.

Today, we celebrated one of the biggest events in the school calendar, Sports Day. Under brilliant sunshine and even brighter spirits, the children showcased their sporting talents, teamwork, and determination. It was a wonderful day of competition and camaraderie, expertly organised by Mr Usher and the Games Department. A huge thank you to all involved.

And finally, as the sun sets on this action-packed week, we are preparing for the magnificent Camp Out! A highlight for many, and one I am personally excited to experience for the first time. My sincere thanks go to Mrs Gross and to Beachborough Friends for bringing the magic of Camp Out to life for our school community.

It has been a week full of joy, laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories.

Wishing you all a sunny weekend after such a brilliant few days.

Form VIII go to Bude!

Day 1:

The much-anticipated Form VIII residential trip to Bude began bright and early, with children and staff departing promptly at 8:00am. Spirits were high as the coach pulled away and the long journey was filled with chatter, movies and excitement. After a smooth drive with a 45-minute stop along the way, we arrived safely at the campsite in Bude at 2:30pm.

Upon arrival, the children wasted no time in getting stuck into the first activity of the trip—setting up their own tents. With a combination of teamwork, determination and a plenty of laughs, all the tents were successfully pitched, and the campsite quickly came to life with the buzz of activity. It was fantastic to see the pupils helping one another and showing great independence and resilience.

Once everything was set up and the children had a chance to settle in, we made our way to a local pub for a well-deserved supper. The children enjoyed a hearty meal and were complimented by the staff for their excellent manners and behaviour.

To round off the day, we spent a relaxing hour on the beach where the children enjoyed playing games, exploring the shoreline, paddling / swimming and simply soaking up the fresh sea air. The evening sun and the sound of the waves provided a perfect backdrop to wind down after a full day of travel and activity.

Everyone returned to the campsite tired but happy, ready to rest and recharge for the days ahead.

Day 2:

The second day of the Form VIII residential trip to Bude was blessed with glorious sunshine, setting the tone for an exciting day of outdoor activities and team bonding. The morning kicked off with an invigorating early swim in the iconic Bude sea pool, where the students were able to take in the beautiful coastal surroundings while enjoying a refreshing dip.

The day was divided into three activity groups, each designed to provide the children with a chance to explore the best that the Bude coastline has to offer. Group 1 started the day with bodyboarding in the morning, an activity that allowed them to ride the waves and experience the thrill of the ocean up close. After a quick lunch, the group switched to Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) in the afternoon, a more relaxed yet equally enjoyable way to explore the water while balancing on their boards.

Group 2 had a different combination of activities. They began their morning with SUP, mastering the balance and technique required to glide over the water. In the afternoon, they enjoyed a session of surfing, where the children were able to challenge themselves with larger waves and perfect their surfing skills under the guidance of expert instructors.

Group 3 started their day with surfing, giving the students the chance to catch some great waves and learn the basics of this exhilarating sport. In the afternoon, the group switched to bodyboarding, further developing their water skills while continuing to have fun in the surf.

After a full day of activities, we were treated to a delicious supper at the local pub where the popular burgers provided much needed sustenance. An evening of R&R followed as the children unwound with a friendly game of cricket, enjoyed the warmth of a crackling fire pit and roasting marshmallows under the evening sky.

All in all, it was a truly amazing day for everyone involved.

Day 3:

Day 3 of the Form VIII residential began with a rare and welcome lie-in as all the children slept soundly until 7.30am – a sign of just how much fun (and activity) they’ve been having so far. As a result of the slightly slower start, the morning run was set aside in favour of a more relaxed pace to the day. Spirits were high and appetites strong as we gathered for another hearty breakfast, fuelling everyone for the adventures ahead.

The day’s activities were once again split between three groups, each heading off for a different water-based pursuit along the Bude coastline. Group 1 took to the waves for a surfing session, enjoying the challenge and thrill of catching the perfect wave. Group 2 embraced bodyboarding, mastering balance and speed under the guidance of experienced instructors. Meanwhile, Group 3 explored the waters by paddle board, testing both core strength and coordination – with plenty of laughs along the way.

After an action-packed morning, the afternoon saw a shift in pace with a visit to ‘beach school’. Here, the children took part in a beach clean, working together to collect litter and learning about the importance of keeping our coastal environments clean and safe for wildlife. This was followed by a fascinating session on sand dune preservation, where the group discovered how these fragile ecosystems are formed and why they are so important to the local environment.

As the sun dipped lower, we returned to the pub for another excellent supper – a chance to refuel, reflect on the day and share stories from the morning’s adventures. The final treat of the evening was an outdoor movie back at the campsite.

With cheeks glowing from the sun and sea air and bodies weary from a day of physical activity and learning, it was no surprise that both children and staff were more than ready for bed. Day 3 was another memorable chapter in an unforgettable residential – full of learning, laughter and life by the sea.

Day 4:

Our final full day in Bude began with a wonderfully refreshing swim in the original sea pool. With the morning sun sparkling on the water, it was the perfect way to wake up and energise ourselves for another packed day of adventure. The sea pool, a unique and iconic feature of Bude provided a fun and invigorating start and spirits were high as we headed back to camp for a hearty breakfast.

After eating, the entire group set off together on foot to Widemouth Bay. The weather continued to be spectacular, with clear blue skies and warm sunshine. Once we arrived, we spent the day as one big group enjoying surfing and bodyboarding. The waves were ideal – challenging enough for those eager to test their skills, but also perfect for beginners finding their feet. There was a wonderful sense of teamwork and support as everyone cheered each other on and made the most of the perfect coastal conditions.

Lunch was a relaxed picnic-style affair on the beach, giving us time to refuel and enjoy each other’s company before the walk back to camp. The coastal views were stunning throughout the day and gave us all a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty surrounding us.

Supper that evening was a real highlight – a delicious BBQ at The Shack, where we enjoyed tasty food and reflected on everything we’ve experienced this week. It was a lovely, relaxed way to end the day.

Back at the campsite, it was time for the children to begin packing their bags, a clear sign that our adventure was nearing its end. As a special finale to the week, we gathered together to watch a film of our trip, thoughtfully compiled by our photographer. The room was full of laughter and joy as we relived so many of the special moments we’ve shared together over the week.

We have a collection of incredible memories that we’ll treasure for a long time, and this residential was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Early Years to Pre-Prep 2 Sports Day

On Friday 20th June, our children in Nursery-PP2 took part in their Sports Day!

Nursery and Kindergarten were joined by their friends and families, who competed in a set of light-hearted races: Flat Race, Obstacle Race, Egg & Spoon, and the Novelty Race, which involved planting a sunflower. Later in the day, our Reception-PP2 children were cheered on, as they took part in events such as the Javelin, Bean Bag Hoopla, and Dazzling Dribblers. Their track races included a sprint, egg and spoon, sack race, and a relay!

Our spectators were full of pride as their children crossed finish lines, high-fives were exchanged between classmates, and the children were continually met with encouraging applause.

Whether it was winning a race or simply trying something new, the true victory was in the effort and camaraderie shown by all!

Congratulating Arthur…

After a significant amount of time spent training, Arthur K, in Form VI, competed in the 2nd national gymnastics qualifier last weekend at The International Centre in Telford.

He completed 2 new runs, a twist whip to double tuck and twist whip to double pike, this took his difficulty 1.4 higher than his runs in qualifier 1. He landed both of them with great execution, scoring 20.8 and 21.1, 41.9 altogether, this giving Arthur a PB score. This secured him a gold medal!

Beachborough School is very impressed by Arthur’s skills and commitment and we wish him all the best in his continued gymnastic journey as he moves into his new school. We cannot wait to hear about his next success!

Enrichment Week 2025: Your Voice Matters

Our recent Enrichment Week was a fantastic celebration of children’s voices, with the whole timetable embracing the theme “Your Voice Matters.” From start to finish, children had exciting opportunities to share their opinions and take the lead.

The week kicked off with a special lunch vote — chicken nuggets and chips won the popular vote, with spaghetti bolognese coming in a close second. Lunchtime was a real treat!

One of the highlights was the “Headteacher for a Day” election. Children confidently presented their manifestos and inspired their peers before everyone cast their votes. It was wonderful to see so many children step up and express their ideas.

Throughout the week, all lessons tied into the theme, encouraging children to explore the power of their own voice. Activities included climbing the beech tree, where many bravely conquered their fear of heights, football freestyle sessions that sparked energy and creativity, Nifty Lift workshops, and even creating a mock trial at a Magistrates Court — offering a hands-on look at justice and debate.

Enrichment Week truly empowered our children to believe that their voices matter, and we look forward to experiencing Dougy’s day as Head Teacher!

Enrichment Week Reports…

During Enrichment week our Form VI pupils expressed their pupil voice, and chose to embark on an unforgettable journey of exploration, innovation, and imagination!

For the first time ever, our students used virtual reality (VR) headsets to step into the wild. With wide eyes and excited gasps, they found themselves face-to-face with orangutans swinging through the treetops and rabbits hopping through meadows, all in their natural habitats. The adventure didn’t stop there, they dived beneath the waves to swim alongside shimmering fish in the deep blue sea, discovering the wonders of marine life in a fully immersive experience.

But not all the action happened in the virtual world. Some budding biologists chose to get their hands wet with pond dipping, carefully observing real-life organisms in our school’s natural wetland habitat. From water beetles to minnows, the children were amazed by the diversity of life just beneath the surface.

Meanwhile, our future engineers took on a thrilling challenge. Using our rollercoaster kits, they designed and built tracks that allowed a car to complete a full 360-degree loop! With teamwork, creativity, and a bit of trial and error, they celebrated as their cars zoomed through the loop-the-loop with cheers all around.

Enrichment week has been a celebration of curiosity, creativity, and courage to try something new. Whether diving into the ocean, exploring the forest, or building the next big thrill ride, Form VI have truly shown what it means to be explorers of the world, both real and virtual.

Well done, Form VI! We can’t wait to see where your curiosity takes you next.

Dr Holder

As part of Enrichment Week, pupils took part in a series of exciting geography-themed games that brought learning to life in the most imaginative ways. They used their ‘Pupil Voice’ to select games which appealed to them.

From rolling dice in Geography Monopoly to navigating the world in GeoGuessr and Who Knows Where, pupils tested their knowledge of countries, capitals, and landmarks. The competitive spirit was high as pupils raced to identify mystery locations using street views and clues from around the globe.

In Volcano Top Trumps, pupils compared explosive facts about famous volcanoes, while More or Less challenged them to think critically about population sizes, land areas, and other geographical stats. Mount Cleverest lived up to its name, pushing students to the peak of their geographical knowledge with clever quizzes and challenges.

The week was a brilliant reminder that learning can be just as exciting as it is educational.

Future of Transport Competition

This term, Form V have been feverishly working on collaborative projects which have looked for sustainable solutions in the transport industry. They considered current issues within the industry and innovated products which could improve these problems. The competition culminated in a poster conference in the Whybrow, in which the teams battled it out, by presenting their ideas to the judges. All participants put forward exciting, well considered projects, but a special congratulations must go to the winners of the three categories:

  • Clear Presentation: Georgie D, Evelyn B and Orla T
  • Innovation: Fran T and Clemmie N
  • Scientific Grounding: Amiyah R and Bella I

FVIII Paintballing Trip

On Tuesday 24th June, Form VIII had a fantastic day out paintballing. Everyone arrived at school full of energy and anticipation, ready to take on the day. After a short minibus ride, we reached the paintballing centre, tucked away in the woods — the perfect location for action-packed adventure.

Once we got into our overalls and protective gear, the instructors gave us a safety briefing and explained the rules of the games. Then it was time to split into teams, load up our markers (paintball guns) and head into the first arena. The buzz of excitement was impossible to ignore and the friendly competition between classmates made the atmosphere electric.

The games varied throughout the day, from “Capture the Flag” to “Last Team Standing,” each one offering a different challenge and requiring teamwork, strategy and quick thinking. One of the highlights was a thrilling game in a fortress-like structure, where teams team had to defend the base from incoming attacks. There was laughter, shouting and the occasional squeal as paintballs flew through the air.

Although we all ended up covered in colourful splats, nobody seemed to mind — in fact, that was part of the fun! It was great to see everyone getting involved, supporting one another and enjoying a day away from the usual classroom routine. Even those who were initially nervous quickly got into the spirit of the event and came away with big smiles on their faces.

Lunch was a welcome break after a morning of running, dodging and firing and we spent some time chatting about our favourite moments and the funniest hits. Some people definitely discovered hidden talents for stealth and tactics!

By the end of the day, everyone was exhausted but thoroughly content. The journey home was filled with stories, laughter and a few friendly debates about who was the best shot. It was a day that brought us closer as a year group and created lasting memories.

Paintballing with Form VIII was not only tremendous fun but also a brilliant way to bond, unwind and do something totally different. We’ll be talking about it for weeks to come!

A Staffing Update

Mrs Aimee Rowe will be leaving Beachborough at the end of this academic year to take on an exciting new role as a Year 5/6 Class Teacher at Kings Sutton Primary School. Aimee has been an integral part of the Beachborough community for many years. She first joined the school in 1990 as a Classroom Assistant and returned in September 1996 as a Class Teacher. Since then, she has devoted nearly three decades to the education, care, and encouragement of countless Beachburians. Aimee’s warmth and commitment have left a lasting impression on all who have had the pleasure of working with her or being taught by her. I would like to thank Aimee for everything she has given to Beachborough and wish her all the very best for the future.

Mrs Tessa Vincent will be joining Beachborough as a new Class Teacher in Pre-Prep 1, taking over from Mrs Rowe. Tessa is an experienced teacher who has worked across both Early Years and Key Stage 1. She joins us from Carrdus School, where she is the Year 1 Teacher and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for early years education. We are excited to have Tessa join our Pre-Prep team and look forward to the energy, experience, and warmth she will bring to the Beachborough community.

More Triathlon Success!

Last Sunday, athletes from the Beachborough & Brackley Triathlon club competed at Twyford, Reading, for the 5th race of the South Central Series. Jack S and Hermione S both placed 3rd in their respective TS1 categories, and it was all smiles for Jenna S who took the win in the female TS2 category. A special mention must go to Darcey S, who raced brilliantly but narrowly missed out on a podium place. Well done, everyone!

The Summer Concert 2025

The Summer Concert was a spectacular evening, with incredible performances and a time to say thank you to the brilliant music teachers and our leavers, both children and staff; Amy Swain, our super violin teacher who is much in demand as a performer, and Tim Wilson, who is finally properly retiring after ‘retiring’  5 years ago.  Tim was an inspiration to me as a student, and I owe him a great deal. It’s time he enjoyed some time off!

We wish all our musicians well.  Enjoy the next chapter!

FVIII Exam Results

On Wednesday, our FVIII year group were presented with their CE Exam result certificates.

It was a huge moment for our oldest Beachburians, who have worked incredibly hard in recent months. The results were truly outstanding and we are so proud of the effort, time, and dedication they have shown towards their exams, and have no doubt that they will demonstrate all of these qualities at their chosen senior schools.

Well done, Form VIII!

Equestrian News!

On Saturday 21st June, the Beachborough Equestrian Team took part in the NSEA Grass Roots Regional Championship Qualifiers in the 40cm show jumping class.

The team, made up of Wilf riding Teapot, Clementine riding Gem, and Harriet on two ponies, Sunny & Rosie, had the usual super early start at Bury Farm, but as always full of smiles and determination.

They all rode beautiful clear rounds and the team came a fabulous 2nd, meaning they have qualified for the Championships, at Hickstead.

Harriet also went on to be placed 5th on Sunny and 6th on Rosie individually out of a class of 18. Well done Harriet!

This team will now join Beachborough’s other riders who qualified last Autumn, Orla, Florrie, Harriet and Philippa. Geordie will also be on the team in August.

We are delighted to have two teams going to the Championships, and are very proud of all the riders who have really worked hard with their ponies this year!

Big thanks to all the parents, Tash Haliday for hosting us,  and Katie Gilsenan, our fabulous trainer!

Mrs Garrett-Sheane

Club Challenge Day 2025

On Thursday, we hosted our Beachborough Club Challenge Day – an event involving all pupils from Form III to Form VIII representing their clubs in a range of activities and earning points for enthusiasm, initiative and collaboration along the way. This year, our clubs took part in an exciting scavenger hunt around the Manor House, made incredible tie-dyed t-shirts in the art room, learnt crowd-pleasing circus skills and took part in a challenging obstacle course on the field whilst carrying cups of water! Club Captains and Form VIII took the lead, encouraging younger pupils to get involved and earn valuable points towards their club total.

This year, the day ended with one of the highlights of the club calendar – CLUB SHOUT! Huge thanks to our judges, Miss Shalomi and Sammie Hawkins, who had the unenviable task of choosing a winner from four incredible performances. Every club performed with such enormous energy, amazing volume and colourful props, it was impossible not to clap and sing along. Congratulations to the Club Shout winners for 2025, who won with a brilliant rendition of Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ – BOARDMAN!

Then came the final totals for Club Challenge day. With the points from Club Shout added, it became a very close contest, however one team emerged victorious. The winners of Club Challenge 2025 are……SPRAWSON!!

Thank you to all of the pupils and staff for embracing the spirit of the day and getting involved. It was a fabulous celebration of what our club system is all about.

Club Leaders – Mrs Franklin, Mr Jackson, Mrs Gross and Miss Morle
