“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” Robert Frost

There are few school traditions as enduring, spirited and cherished as Club Poetry at Beachborough. As we gathered on Friday for this much-loved event, it was impossible not to feel the weight of history behind it. Club Poetry has been woven into the fabric of the Christmas Term for at least a quarter of a century, and its magic continues to cast the same spell today as it did in its earliest years.

The importance of children performing poetry by heart cannot be overstated. At first glance, it may seem simply an exercise in memory, but in truth it develops a wealth of valuable skills. To learn a poem is to practise discipline, perseverance and close reading. To perform it is to nurture confidence, articulation, emotional expression and the ability to hold the attention of an audience. Children learn to interpret language, understand rhythm and nuance, and communicate meaning with clarity and poise. They also learn something quietly profound: that their voice has power.

Friday’s event was a joyful showcase of these skills in action. Every child who stepped onto the stage did so with courage and character, bringing their chosen poem to life in their own way. The atmosphere was warm and celebratory, filled with the unique blend of anticipation and pride that only a live performance can bring.

We were delighted to welcome from Kate Walker, Head of the Senior School at Bruern Abbey, to judge the competition; she brought insight, encouragement and great enthusiasm to the occasion. Her thoughtful feedback helped the children appreciate not only what they had achieved, but how they might continue to grow as confident communicators.

Club Poetry remains one of those cherished Beachborough traditions that speaks to who we are as a school. It celebrates language, imagination and courage. It brings us together as a community. And, year after year, it reminds us that poetry does not simply live on the page, it lives in the voices of our children.

Huge congratulations to all the children who participated.

On a different note, I look forward to welcoming you to the Online Safety Talk on Monday at 5.30pm, and the Information Talk about life in Form VII and VIII at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Enjoy a wonderful weekend,

Simone

Boardman Stay & Plays and Show & Shares

This week, we have enjoyed the first PP1 – FIV Show and Shares of the school year. Thank you for joining us and sharing in your child’s incredible efforts, learning and thinking so far this term.

There is great significance in children actively sharing their learning experiences with the important adults in their lives. When children see that these adults are genuinely interested in their learning, it helps foster a positive attitude towards school and learning. This encouragement motivates children to engage more actively, as they feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when sharing their efforts.

There was a very genuine joy and delightful hubbub in each classroom as children proudly showed their learning in their books and learning environments.

Last week, our Early Years Stay and Play session was another wonderful example of how meaningful adult involvement can support children’s development. When significant adults join in play, they are not only strengthening relationships but also supporting vital aspects of early growth – such as communication, problem-solving and creativity. Play is a child’s natural way of exploring and making sense of the world, and when adults participate, it reinforces the value of these experiences. This shared play nurtures confidence, curiosity and a love of learning that will benefit children throughout their educational journey.

Thank you to all the adults who have taken time to engage and support- your involvement truly enriches the children’s experiences.

“If we succeed in giving the love of learning, the learning itself is sure to follow.” John Lubbock

Boarding Craft Evening Brings Christmas Cheer

The Boarding House was full of festive spirit last Friday as our boarders enjoyed a wonderfully creative Craft Friday Night Boarding event. Pupils took part in a rotation of activities, each table offering a different Christmas themed project to try.

The children made mini Christmas bobble hat decorations, crafted stars from drinking straws, decorated candles in terracotta pots for table centre-pieces, and constructed charming mini “gingerbread” houses using malted milk biscuits. Everyone decorated a personalised paper gift bag to take home their handcrafted treasures.

The rooms buzzed with excitement, chatter, and laughter as the boarders embraced the Christmas spirit. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Cox and Miss Baldry for their creative ideas and brilliant organisation.

It was a joyful evening from start to finish and a perfect start to the festive season!

Children in Need 2025

Last week, we supported Children in Need through a fun-filled Mufti Day, a cake sale, and the ever-popular discos!

We’re thrilled to announce that we raised a record-breaking amount this year: £1,025!

A big thank you to our community for their generous donations, and for baking such delicious cakes that made the perfect afternoon treat.

The Beachborough Friends Discos

This fantastic event was made possible thanks to funds raised through our successful events—most recently our brilliant Fireworks Night.

DJ Dre from DNA Kids was a huge hit! The children had a great time limbo-ing, dancing with their friends, and even watching their teachers get their groove on too!

For those who preferred a quieter moment, we hope your children enjoyed the popcorn.

Operation Christmas Child

A few weeks ago, we launched Operation Christmas Child – a fantastic initiative whereby shoe boxes are filled with toys, personal care items, school supplies, and fun gifts, and sent to children in need across the word.

This year, we received a fantastic 68 shoe boxes, which were hand-delivered to our local drop-off point by Mr and Mrs Gross last weekend. Thank you to everybody who kindly filled their boxes with lovely gifts; we know this will make a huge difference to many children at Christmas time this year.

Club Art 2025

We recently held our annual Club Art competition for children in Reception to Form VIII, and this year’s theme was Woodland. The creativity and imagination on display was truly astounding, with our children exploring the theme using a wide variety of materials and artistic mediums.

This competition showcased just how many talented young artists we have within our community; each entry reflected individuality and skill, so a big well done to everyone who took part! The results were as follows…

Overall Club Winners:

  • 1st: Carder
  • 2nd: Chappell
  • 3rd: Sprawson
  • 4th: Boardman

Individual results:

Mr Spirrett’s New Band

Mr Spirrett, our brilliant Sax, Clarinet and Piano teacher, started a new band this week – these children volunteered to join, and they have already started playing solos and improvising!

Brass, String and Wind Concert

On Monday, children in Forms IV to VIII took to the stage for our Brass, String, and Wind Concert, led by the talented Mr Lewis, Mr Law, and Mr Spirrett.

Performing a wonderful range of pieces for friends and family, the children showcased not only their incredible talent but also the remarkable progress they’ve made. Well done to all involved, you were amazing!

Congratulating Tilly and Ellie

A huge well done to Tilly and Ellie (FV), who passed their Grade 1 flute with Distinction this week! A fantastic achievement; well done, girls.

Form V STEAM Day: Biomimicry in Action

On Thursday, Form V explored the fascinating concept of biomimicry—how nature inspires innovation. In science, pupils experimented with sodium alginate, a natural polysaccharide extracted from the cell walls of brown seaweed found in cold waters. Alginate gives seaweed flexibility, especially in species from choppy seas, and was first studied in 1881 by English chemist E.C.C. Stanford. Using this material, pupils created bubbles similar to those in bubble tea, discovering how natural properties can be harnessed for creative and practical applications.

FULL STEAM AHEAD! In computing, the children focused on the case study of the ‘Shinkansen’ Bullet Train from Japan. It was designed with the help of a birdwatcher! It incorporated the features of a Kingfisher, a penguin and an owl. With their ideas ready, the groups then designed their own bullet trains in the world of Minecraft. Their designs certainly put Mr. Yates’ Thomas the Tank Engine to shame!

After a brief introduction, some examples of what biomimicry is, and where it has been applied in an engineering context, pupils in TED undertook some practical investigation. They were charged with constructing nearly a hundred hexagons, squares and circles and neatly arranging them into frames. Then came the fun part; testing to destruction. The idea was simple; the configuration that supported the most weight was the winner. Unfortunately, it was at this point that both nature and engineering let us down, with hexagons, the expected (and deserved) winners, failing miserably to perform when it mattered the most. However, this led to a useful reflection on the need for accuracy and repeatability in engineering, as well as a critique of the manufacturing techniques that had been employed and how they could be improved. The session closed with a short video on the construction of the much overlooked and underrated engineering marvel that is IKEA’s Lack furniture, a perfect example of efficiency, relentless development and biomimicry. Overall, an enjoyable and informative session was had by all.

In Art, the children explored the world of Leonardo da Vinci and his early inventions, based upon his interest in the flight of birds. They designed, made and decorated their own parachutes based on his early designs, and put them to the test when they were dropped from a height on the red stairs!

All in all, it was a fantastic day, filled with creativity, exploration, and discovery. Thank you to Dr Holder, Mr Yates, Mr Cowan, and Mrs Cox for facilitating it.

A Reminder to Parents: Uniform

With the cold weather now firmly taking hold, please can you ensure that the children are wearing Beachborough School hats and scarves along with navy gloves or mittens as part of their winter uniform. The only acceptable alternative is plain navy blue items.

The children should also be wearing a Beachborough school coat, no other coats are permitted at school.

Thank you for helping us maintain a consistent and smart appearance for all pupils.
