“What we are looking for in a Scholar is a love of their discipline and a sense of both humility and ambition.” Sarah Kerr-Dineen

Sarah Kerr-Dineen’s words capture the true essence of scholarship. They remind us that being a scholar is not solely about ability, but about attitude, a genuine love of learning, a commitment to continuous improvement, and a sense of humility. A scholar is not defined by accolades or accomplishments alone, but by a deep eagerness to learn, a willingness to lead by example, and an openness to challenge and growth.

As the end of the school year approaches, many children in Form VII are beginning to look ahead to the exciting transition to senior school. For some, will this include the possibility of applying for a scholarship. While it is easy to assume that scholarships are awarded purely on the basis of exceptional talent, many go beyond this. They recognise potential, not as something fixed, but as something evolving. They reward initiative, open-mindedness, curiosity, and resilience.

In my experience, the most inspiring scholars are not those who know everything, but those who are keen to keep learning. They are not discouraged by setbacks; rather, they see challenge as an integral and valuable part of their journey.

For those children at Beachborough considering a scholarship pathway, I would encourage them to reflect not only on their achievements, but on how they have grown, personally, intellectually, and emotionally. A scholarship should never be viewed as a final destination, but as the beginning of a new and exciting phase of development.

With this in mind, I am pleased to share that Mrs Katie Exarheas will now be overseeing all scholarship applications and preparation. Katie brings a wealth of expertise and a particular interest in supporting Higher Level Learners in her role as our Higher-Level Learner Coordinator.

If your son or daughter is interested in applying for a scholarship, I warmly encourage you to book an appointment with Katie. In the meantime, further information about the scholarship process can be found via these links:

I had the pleasure of watching two productions this week, the first being the Form IV production, “The School O Vision Song Contest,” and it was simply superb. From start to finish, it was bursting with energy, creativity, and humour, a real celebration of the children’s talents and teamwork. It was also a particularly fitting way to mark the end of Form IV’s time in the Boardman. Their enthusiasm and commitment shone brightly on stage, and it was a memorable send-off that they, and we, will cherish. A huge thank you to all of Form IV for their hard work, and to Mrs Johnson and Mrs McNamara for their incredible energy, time and support in bringing the production to life. What a wonderful way to end the year!

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the superb Form VIII Showcase, where special memories of Beachborough were shared. Many of the performances were written by the children themselves, making it a truly memorable occasion. Thank you to Mrs Andrew and Mrs Cox for their support of the children.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Stowe this weekend for the Beachborough and Brackley Triathlon.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

Simone

The FIV Longridge Trip

Just before half term, Form IV embarked on an unforgettable trip to Longridge Activity Centre. Blessed with beautiful weather, the children truly challenged themselves, embracing their fears and working together as a team. Smiles and laughter filled the air as they engaged in exciting activities like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, climbing, Jacob’s Ladder, laser tag, and even building a trebuchet. We all thoroughly enjoyed dragon boating, racing against each other and creating memories that will last a lifetime. After a night sleeping in tents, the children rose early, eager to dive into more adventures. Returning home tired and wet but happy, it was all in all a fabulous trip enjoyed by us all.

IAPS East Area Regionals in Bedford

Last Friday, we took a squad of athletes to Bedford International Athletics Stadium for the East Area Prep Schools’ Athletics Championships. For some, this was an opportunity to prove themselves and have their best shot at reaching the Nationals, for others, it would be an amazing first experience at such an established stadium. Our athletes certainly rose to the challenge of competing against strong competition from no less than fifty schools, and they were rewarded with many fantastic personal bests and placings.

Although the weather was erratic to say the least, spirits weren’t dampened as we alternated dodged torrential rain showers throughout the first few hours. As always, our hurdlers were first up and they performed well, with most of them qualifying for their finals a short time later. Another early event saw William G running in the U12 Boys’ 1500m where he competed with quiet confidence. William ran a superb strategic race, and we were thrilled to cheer him on as he crossed the line taking the gold medal.

Beachborough athletes participated in a wide range of both track and field events, with Ian D having enormous success in winning the Boys’ U13 Javelin. Throwing just short of 30m was an incredible achievement for Ian, with silver being awarded to a throw almost five metres less. Finally, we won another medal in the U14 Boys’ Long Jump; this time it was Josh S’s turn to be rewarded for his great efforts.

Other highlights included Kit S recording a PB in the U14 Boys’ 1500m, Lucas C also achieving a PB in the U14 Boys’ High Jump with a jump of 1.30m and Bella G finishing 4th on countback in the U14 Girls’ High Jump (also 1.30m). In addition, Edward C, Alex H and Bella made the finals of their respective age group hurdles event.

As a result of striking gold in their respective events, William and Ian will automatically go on to represent the East Area in the National Schools’ Athletics Meeting which will be staged at the impressive Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. This event takes place at the beginning of July, and we wish both boys every success in their events.

FVIII’s Thrilling Day at Thorpe Park

Form VIII enjoyed an unforgettable day filled with excitement, laughter, and adventure at Thorpe Park. The trip, highly anticipated by students and staff alike, lived up to every expectation. As the coach rolled into the park under a bright blue sky, the group buzzed with energy, ready to experience the UK’s top thrill rides.

The day began with a ride on Stealth, one of the fastest rollercoasters in Europe, which left hearts racing and spirits soaring. Next, students tackled Colossus and Nemesis Inferno, screaming with delight through loops and drops. For those seeking a break from the adrenaline, Rumba Rapids and The Walking Dead: The Ride offered fun and chills in equal measure.

Lunch gave everyone a chance to recharge and share stories of their favourite moments so far. Staff praised the pupils for their excellent behaviour, teamwork, and courage in trying new things. The day closed with a visit to the gift shop and a final group photo, capturing smiles that told the story of a perfect outing.

Thorpe Park proved to be more than just a day out—it was a celebration of the end of exams and memories that will last long after the rides have stopped.

Jack and Max’s Equestrian Success

Last weekend, Jack and Max J represented Beachborough in the Show Jumping event at Rectory Farm.

We’re delighted to share that Jack placed 1st and Max 2nd in the 90cm competition. Max also placed 10th in the 80cm and was awarded the cup for Horsemanship, which is a great honour. Well done, boys!

Connie’s 6-month Update

Our sponsored pup, Connie, celebrated her 6 month birthday on the 4th June!

Connie’s socialiser, Jeremy, has kindly shared some of her adventures with us:

  • Sam, our Puppy Co-ordinator, has been working with me on improving her recall. We have also ventured into M&S and Next on the retail park to tackle busy spaces, stairs and lifts. Connie really enjoyed all the smells in the food hall! Sam is very happy with her progress.
  • She is prone to getting a little over excited in the presence of small children and other dogs. However, we are working very hard on this, with high value treats, and she is making good progress.
  • She has a large array of toys to play with and especially enjoys the ones that squeak or move.
  • We recently bought her a paddling pool for the hot days and she has now developed a fondness for water. So much so that on a free run, if there’s a dip to be had, then she’ll definitely make the most of it. Her breast stroke and front crawl are shocking, but she has now mastered the doggy paddle!
  • She has visited the seaside, but wasn’t too sure about the waves. We are so lucky to live where we do as there are so many local walks, as well as exploring areas, in and around the Cotswolds.
  • She has developed a lovely wave in her glossy, black coat and now weighs in at a whopping 20.7kg!

We’re delighted to hear that Connie is progressing well and having lots of fun with Jeremy. We can’t wait for the next update!

Witnessing Metamorphosis: A Magical Science Journey

Over the past few weeks, pupils and staff have had the incredible opportunity to witness one of nature’s most fascinating life cycles, the metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies, thanks to the resources provided by InsectLore.

Using InsectLore’s educational kits, the Science Department carefully nurtured caterpillars through each stage of their transformation, from tiny larvae to chrysalides and finally to beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. Today, in a special moment led by the EcoCommittee, the butterflies were released into the wild, marking the end of an unforgettable journey and the beginning of a new one for our winged friends.

The experience has not only deepened pupils’ understanding of biological processes but also fostered a greater appreciation for the natural world. Caterpillars were also shared with The Boardman, allowing our younger Scientists to witness the wonder of metamorphosis first-hand.

A huge thank you to the Mrs. Parsons, our Science Technician and to the Science Department and EcoCommittee for bringing this inspiring learning experience to life!

IAPS East Area Athletics Championships

We had a wonderful afternoon in Cambridge on Tuesday with a small squad of Form IV and V athletes for the East Anglian Prep Schools’ Athletics Championships. The competition was strong, and we were impressed with how well our pupils acquitted themselves in their events. Many of them, including both U11 relay teams, progressed to the finals of their respective events. Our stand-out performances came from Sophie L and Georgie DH who both took gold in their events. Sophie ran an impressive time in the U11 Girls’ 800m, leading from the gun, whilst also taking silver in the U11 Girls’ Long Jump. Georgie had a clash of events, so joined the Ball Throw at the very end of the competition; this clearly didn’t phase her as she threw her way to victory. Stanley W showed promise over the barriers, winning his heat and finishing a fantastic 3rd in the U11 Boys’ 70m Hurdles. A special mention must go to Hermione S in Form IV who achieved the fastest 75m time in the U10 Girls’ heats; unfortunately, Hermione could not replicate this in the final as just minutes before, she had given her all in the 600m race. Well done Team Beachborough!

Swimming Success…

On Saturday 7th June, Eva P, Beth J, and Isla R competed in the IAPS National Swimming Finals. It was a fantastic event and a memorable experience for all three competitors. The results were as follows:

  • Eva P finished 12th overall in U11 50m Backstroke
  • Beth J finished 12th overall in U13 50m Freestyle
  • Isla R finished 1st overall in the Para U11 25m Freestyle

Beth has impressively qualified for the IAPS Nationals for three consecutive years, making this a fitting final appearance before she moves on to her next school. A huge well done to all involved!

In addition, Isla went on from London Aquatics to compete in the British Junior Para Championships in Coventry that afternoon and all day Sunday. She swam 5 races and a relay and won the 200m freestyle, receiving another gold medal and now ranking first in Britain for 10-13 year olds! She also won 2 bronze medals, ranking 3rd in 100 fly and 100 breast in Britain for 10-13 year olds.

In Isla’s lovely words, you can achieve anything if you work hard.

Congratulations Isla, we are all incredibly proud of your achievements!

Science at Stowe for FVIII & FVII

An Explosive Afternoon of Chemistry for Form VIII

The afternoon proved to be a resounding success as Form VIII engaged in an exciting chemistry session, exploring advanced practical skills. Pupils conducted acid-alkali titrations using GCSE and A Level laboratory equipment, which proved an excellent opportunity for all to extend their understanding of neutralisation reactions. Our young scientists approached the practical work with impressive focus and demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout.

A highlight of the afternoon was a captivating chemistry show led by Mr. James Tearle. Pupils were thrilled by explosive demonstrations, a “magical” wine trick producing five different drinks, and a dramatic, Mission Impossible-style hydrogen-filled balloon detonation using gunpowder.

The session not only helped pupils refine their laboratory skills but also deepened and extended their understanding of chemical reactions; perfect preparation as they look ahead to their senior school studies.

Form VII Science Morning – A Blast of Discovery!

Our Form VII students had an unforgettable experience during a special science morning at Stowe, where they got hands-on with GCSE-level chemistry experiments and witnessed spectacular scientific demonstrations.

Iodine Clock Titration Challenge

Students worked in teams to perform the iodine clock reaction, a classic chemical experiment that demonstrates reaction kinetics. By carefully measuring and mixing solutions of hydrogen peroxide, potassium iodide, and starch, they aimed to trigger a sudden colour change from clear to deep blue—exactly at the 60-second mark. This challenge tested their precision, timing, and understanding of chemical rates.

Explosion in the Palm of Your Hand

In a thrilling and safe demonstration, James Tearle captivated the children with a live demonstration of electrolysis, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gases using an electric current. The collected hydrogen bubbles were scooped up by Ben S and ignited to produce a small but powerful explosion, illustrating the reactivity of hydrogen and the energy stored in chemical bonds.

Elephant’s Toothpaste Grand Finale

The event concluded with a giant eruption of elephant’s toothpaste—a foamy explosion caused by the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide using potassium iodide as a catalyst. The reaction released oxygen gas, which got trapped in soap to create a towering column of foam. This colourful, high-energy reaction was a perfect way to end the day with a bang!

The morning was a perfect blend of fun, learning, and inspiration, sparking curiosity and excitement about science in every student.

The FVIII Showcase

On Thursday evening, Form VIII took to the stage one final time.

FVIII wanted to say a huge and heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the staff – past and present – who have helped them on their Beachborough journey. The audience were treated to a variety of acts, that celebrated the children as individuals and as a year group. From live art to sports skills, and monologues to presenting the ‘Teacher Awards’, the children captivated the audience with their talents.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as they concluded with a slideshow of the children’s memories from over the years. Although it was their final performance, FVIII still have plenty to look forward to before the end of term, and we can’t wait to make their final weeks at Beachborough Prep special.

Banbury Bowl

The Form VIII trip to Banbury Bowl was a fantastic morning out, filled with laughter, friendly competition, and great team spirit. From the moment the students arrived, excitement was in the air. The bright, colourful lanes and lively atmosphere set the perfect tone for a fun and memorable outing.

Everyone quickly got into the swing of things getting into groups and finding their lane. Whether it was a strike, a spare, or even the occasional gutter ball, cheers and smiles were constant. For some, it was a chance to show off their bowling skills; for others, it was all about trying something new and having a go. Regardless of experience, every student gave it their all and supported their teammates throughout.

Between games, there was plenty of time to chat, relax, enjoy some snacks and have a game of pool or crazy golf. The arcade area also proved popular adding even more excitement to the morning.

By the time the trip came to an end, there were lots of happy faces and stories to share. It was a great morning out and a wonderful opportunity for Form VIII to enjoy time together away from the classroom.
