From classroom to community: A spotlight on… Matt Phillips

Beachborough Prep Deputy Head (Operations) Matt Phillips

This week’s ‘From classroom to community: A spotlight on…’ introduces another member of our fantastic team, offering a glimpse into the person behind the role and what inspires their work here at Beachborough Prep.

Matt Phillips, Deputy Head (Operations), joined the Beachborough team in September 2025, bringing with him a passion for music and a wealth of experience. Although he has only been with us a short time, he has already made a significant impact.

So Matt, tell us a little about yourself – what you’re passionate about, your background and what makes you, you.

From an early age, music has always been a real passion of mine and, after a time at university dreaming of a career in a West End band or playing the organ in cathedrals, I realised that what I truly wanted to be when I graduated was to become a prep school Director of Music.

Having spent a decade in the Music Department at Winchester House, I was fortunate enough to finally achieve that dream when I joined Swanbourne House. There, I enjoyed building up the Music Department, providing opportunities for all pupils across the school. Five years after that, I joined the Senior Leadership Team, initially with pastoral and Designated Safeguarding Lead responsibilities and more latterly with an operational oversight role.

Joining Beachborough has been great, as it allows me to focus on the operational side of things as my main role, while still being able to stay involved in music, which is a real joy.

What is your role here at Beachborough?

As Deputy Head (Operations), my role involves the day-to-day running of the school from an operational point of view. Ensuring duties and lessons are appropriately staffed, overseeing trips and visits, planning the school diary, and making sure events run smoothly are just some of my responsibilities. I also have overall responsibility for Boarding, and I thoroughly enjoy helping with duties in the Boarding House.

What do you love the most about being part of the Beachborough team?

I have always been enticed by the ‘magic’ of Beachborough. Living in Brackley, and previously teaching at Winchester House, I was well aware of school’s reputation and the sense that it has long been at the forefront of independent education. I then spent 12 years driving past the front door every day on my way to Swanbourne, which only added to my sense of wonder!

I am delighted now to be lucky enough to work with such a wonderful group of pupils, parents, senior leaders and staff.

What inspired you to do what you do and what keeps you passionate about it today?

Working with children – I never want to completely lose the musical side of what I do, seeing them achieve great things in all areas of school life, but particularly in confidence-building musical performances, is inspiring.

Ultimately, my aim is to ensure the school runs smoothly with happy pupils, staff and parents all working together.

It’s been a pleasure shining a spotlight on Matt this week. His passion, experience, and commitment are already enriching daily life at Beachborough Prep, and we’re delighted to have him as part of our community.
