“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.”

Robert Frost

As we await the return of Form VIII from their leavers’ trip to Bude, I find myself reflecting on this time as a threshold between endings and beginnings and it brings to mind Robert Frost’s famous poem “The Road Not Taken.” In it, the speaker stands “in a yellow wood,” faced with a fork in the path. He has to choose which path to follow.

This image feels particularly poignant at this time of year, reminding us that it is a season of transitions for all the children. The message of Frost’s poem is that the traveller must choose one path, knowing he may never return to try the other. It is a poem about choice, yes, but also about movement, change, and the quiet courage it takes to step into the unknown.

As we approach the end of the school year, all of the children (not only those in Form VIII) stand at a natural point of transition. For some, this will mean moving on to a new school; for others, stepping into a new year group, ready to take on fresh challenges and new expectations. Change is woven into the rhythm of school life, and with it comes the opportunity to grow, to reset, and to look forward with renewed purpose.

Transitions are of course present throughout the year too, every time a child quietly overcomes something they once found difficult, and it is at these moments when confidence builds and when identity begins to take shape.

As we look ahead to Speech Day in a couple of weeks’ time, we will be doing more than celebrating prizes. We will be recognising progress. The small, brave decisions. The acts of kindness. The resilience built along the way.

To all of our leavers, we are proud of the road you have walked at Beachborough, and we are excited, and confident, about the road you will now take. It may, as Frost suggests, make all the difference.

I am also delighted to share some wonderful news: Beachborough has received a Highly Commended award in the Muddy Best Schools Awards for Most Creative Learning Through Play, and we are Finalists in the category for Best Learning Support for Higher-Level Learners. A heartfelt thank you and congratulations to Mrs Butler, Mrs Raclawski, Miss Fry, Mrs Sumner, Mrs Tongue, and Mrs Exarheas for their hard work in preparing these entries.

Congratulations also to Form V for their outstanding performance in The BeachborOscars. It was a joy to see their work from drama lessons brought to life on stage with such confidence, creativity, and energy. The children performed with flair and composure, and perhaps most impressively, demonstrated excellent teamwork, supporting one another, sharing the spotlight, and taking pride in their shared success. Thank you to Mrs Andrew, Mrs Cox, and Mrs Exarheas for their guidance, encouragement, and for bringing the showcase together so brilliantly.

Wishing you all a warm and sunny weekend,

Simone

Form VI go to Normandy!

Monday 9th June. 5.30am. Beachborough School.

After months of preparation, the D-Day has finally arrived. The Form VI battalion boards the coach and heads towards Normandy. The invasion was scheduled for 12.55 French time.

And obviously, we arrived late. There are always delays at Eurotunnel and French timing is very approximate anyway, so welcome to France!

Our first stop was to visit the lovely port of Honfleur, just pass the Pont de Normandie. A quick tour of the town, a compulsory stop in a boulangerie to taste proper pains au chocolat and baguettes, a ride on a carousel and we continued our journey to Carentan-les-Marais, where we were staying for the week.

On Tuesday, we visited the Pegasus Memorial and had the privilege, once more to meet Arlette Gondrée in her café. The café has been owned by the Gondrée family for decades, and the younger daughter, Arlette, 85 is still running it. She is a local celebrity and despite dreadful TripAdvisor reviews (she is French…), her face lit up when she saw and recognised us, with the four children we had chosen to offer her some Cadbury chocolate. She told the children her memories of the Débarquement and how important it is for her to pass them on to children. A very moving moment for us all. We then visited the nearby Ranville British Cemetery to find and pay tribute to Thom J’s great great uncle. Another very touching moment and all children were incredibly respectful and reflective. The day ended in Arromanches-les-Bains, for a short film about the battle of Normandy, and of course some shopping!

On Wednesday, we visited the D-Day experience center, where we had the chance to embark onto a C-47 and pretended to be para-troupers! We then spent the afternoon at the Ferme musée du Cotentin, baked some bourdelots chocolate cake and discovered life in a typical Norman farm. We then finished the day in a goat cheese farm. Some strong friendships were made with the goats! Whilst the group went on a family walk to Carentan, Mr P and Max J, accompanied by Mrs Goode, ended up in A&E after an accidental rugby encounter between Max and Callum! Both boys were fine in the end, and it was lovely to see them checking on each other the following morning!

On Thursday, we spent the day at Le Mont Saint Michel to discover La Merveille. We visited the abbey and enjoyed shopping in the steep narrow cobbled streets of the village. We then stopped in Avranches, for some more shopping and to meet Mr P’s brother and nephew. We also saw the skull of Saint Aubert, bishop of Avranches in the 8th century. Michael had appeared to him twice, ordering him to build an oratory on the island. Aubert ignored him and on his third appearance, Michael put his thumb on Aubert’s head and ordered him to build the oratory again. He eventually obeyed. There is a hole on Saint Aubert’s skull… You don’t mess up with Archangel Michael!

Friday was our last day and we stopped at the lovely market Place Saint Sauveur in Caen, where children enjoyed some last shopping opportunities, amongst which straw baskets, bunch of flowers, saucissons, pastries, fruits and… white asparagus! We eventually got back at Beachborough at 10pm, welcomed by a lovely note from William A! Although William, Arthur and Megan couldn’t come along, they were with us in thoughts daily.

This was an absolutely brilliant week thanks to the impeccable behaviour of all children, their open minds, curiosity, adaptability and great sense of humour. Thank you to the Watson family and to especially to Mrs Goode, for their assistance onsite. But the success of such a trip lies hugely on the help of a group of fantastic people, with, in no particular order, Mrs Jones, Mrs Spencer, Mrs Riley, Mr Trower and Mr Gross. And a very special thank you to Dave, our driver, one of the stars of the show! He said this had been the best ever group of children he had had the opportunity to be with! But the trip would not have been the same with the one and only Mr Southwick. This year again, he worked his magic to share stories and anecdotes about the D-Day. His unique way of entertaining the children -and the staff!- cannot be described, you have to experience it! This is the Beachborough family at its very best. Thank you, for everything you have brought to these trips and to the children over the years.

A Book Fair Update

A huge thank you to those who visited our annual Book Fair before half-term. There were some wonderful books on offer and we had lots of excited customers throughout the entire week. We are thrilled to announce that we raised £690 to spend on updating our school libraries. Thank you also to all our Form VIII volunteers who assisted with the fancy new card machine.

The Beachborough and Brackley Triathlon 2025

On Sunday 15th June, hundreds of children and their families arrived at Stowe School, to complete in the annual Beachborough and Brackley Triathlon.

Colts A vs Swanbourne House

The Colts U11 A girls played a brilliant T20 cricket match, showing great teamwork, focus, and determination. They were a pleasure to coach throughout and secured a well-deserved and impressive win against Swanbourne House.

Isabella B took 3 wickets and bowled a maiden over, helping to keep the pressure on the opposition and contributing to the team’s strong performance. Eva P took 2 wickets, Georgie D’H, Katie J and Tilly E each took 1 wicket, and Maggie J pulled off the catch of the day—an excellent all-round team performance in the field!

Batting was superb from Georgie D’H, who opened the innings and scored an impressive 35 not out, setting a strong foundation for the team’s success. Tilly E and Georgie D’H were a fantastic batting pair, working well together to guide the team to victory. Tilly E sealed the match in style, hitting a boundary to secure the win.

The team won convincingly by 7 wickets, finishing on 104–3. It was a strong all-round performance, with confident batting and solid teamwork throughout.

One Blade

Form IV Beachburians, Henry A and Ethan S-H, spent time writing this wonderful poem, and they’d love to share it with you:

One blade of grass withers,

One blade blossoms.

One child is lucky,

One is not.

One part of this world is freezing up,

One part is burning.

The wind, waves and winter waits.

The sea is calm at one side of the world,

The sea is stormy at the other.

There will always be clouds

But we need to remember

The sun will always be there.

Well done, boys!

Exploring the Wetlands with FVII

Each year, Form VII have the exciting opportunity to spend a morning down at the Wetlands.

This was a hands-on session that formed a valuable part of their environmental science studies within their current topic of Ecosystems. The children explored our freshwater habitats, learning how to sample freshwater invertebrates, identifying their adaptations and key features of a freshwater environment, as well as investigating pollution indicator species.

Thank you to the Science Department for facilitating this; it was certainly a lot of fun and sparked curiosity amongst our children.

The Results are in…

Congratulations to Rafferty P who took a hat trick for the U12A team in their match against Kitebrook!

The Form IV Production

Last week, FIV treated audiences to an incredible show, full of laughter, excitement, and a variety of spectacular performances.

The children brought The School-O-Vision Song Contest to Beachborough Prep, with hosts, Henry A and Scarlett B. The show represented the varied groups that make up our school community, from teachers to the catering team, and grounds staff to Reception children, we saw what really goes on behind closed doors!

Each group competed to win the School-O-Vision crown, and we were all blown away by the singing, acting and choreography that went into each performance. It was an hilarious representation of our wonderful school, and we thank FIV for bringing such energy to the stage!

The FVIII Formal Dinner

Last Friday, our Form VIII children attended the Formal Leavers’ Dinner.

It was an unforgettable evening filled with laughter and reflection, as they came together for a delicious 3-course meal, followed by a night of dancing! The children celebrated an end of an era at Beachborough Prep, but also looked forward to their next adventure at their chosen senior schools.

Thank you to our Houseparents, Mr and Mrs Blithe, for organising such a special evening for our FVIIIs!

Uppingham School’s Taylor Ward Trophy Event

Henry L in Form VI took part in the Taylor Ward trophy event last Sunday 15th June, hosted and held at the stunning setting of Uppingham School. The day comprised of an excellent coaching session in the morning, where Henry was able to meet the other players who were put forward by their respective schools, across the country and also from Scotland and Jersey too, for the event. The boys then enjoyed lunch together before the match in the afternoon.

Henry was selected to play in the Taylor team and they batted first. Henry came into bat at number 4 and retired on 20 not out, making the most of the opportunity he was given. He then bowled beautifully, with figures of 1 for 3, coming on at a time when the opposition, the Ward side, had just started to build some momentum. Henry was also very encouraging in the field, constantly getting behind his team mates. In the end this paid dividends as his Taylor team won by 30 runs.

Congratulations to Henry on a fantastic showing at this event! It was designed for elite cricketers in his age group in prep schools across the UK and he acquitted himself superbly!

B Charity Event

Dear Beachborough Community,

B Charity continues to work with the children and young people at schools in Brackley, supporting their wellbeing and mental health.  We are holding a fundraising event this summer, and would to see members of the Beachborough Community supporting us!  Please come along to what promises to be a fabulous night of fundraising, music and food!

The BeachborOscars!

As you are probably aware, the Academy Awards (known as the Oscars) usually take place in Hollywood. However, last night, the ceremony was held right here, at Beachborough!

This star-studded event took its VIP audience on a journey through Form V’s year of Drama lessons.  With themed categories such as, ‘Best Improvised Screenplay’, the evening was a celebration of what our Form V stars have explored and achieved in their lessons. It was a night of pure entertainment, laughter and (staged) tears, which wowed us, from beginning to end. The Form Vs were absolutely incredible and the sentence, ‘It was like watching real professionals,’ was even heard!

A massive thank you to Form V for providing us with such an outstanding evening, and to all the staff who supported us along the way. Well done!

A download of the show will be available shortly.

U12 Cricket vs Kitebrook

Our U12 girls’ team after their match against Kitebrook on Wednesday.

Notice: Play Equipment

You may have noticed that the play equipment is currently out of bounds.  Unfortunately, the structure is not safe to play on, and we suspect that a couple of the supporting posts below the ground level have rotted.

However, the good news is that very shortly the existing equipment will start to be removed, and over the summer new play equipment will be installed.  This will include not only replacing the existing climbing frame, but also introducing  a ‘tangle trail’ for our younger learners, and outdoors gym equipment for our older learners.  We are really excited about this project, so do hope that you will bear with us for the next few weeks whilst the current equipment is out of action.

Mary’s Meals Fundraisers!

Ida (FIII) and Evelyn (FV) were busy raising money for Mary’s Meals last Saturday by picking, arranging and selling posies to their neighbours. They raised £30 in total and are busy coming up with their next fundraising ideas!

A huge well done, we’re so grateful for your generosity.

Donations wanted for our Colourful Carnival Charity Camp Out

We’re on the hunt for any unwanted decorations you may have lying around at home — think colourful bunting, paper lanterns, ribbons, streamers, or anything else colourful and carnival style!

We would also love any unwanted dressing up kit you might have for the Photo Booth area and Dress Up Carnival Stall. Any hats, wigs, clothes or props would be very welcome.

If you have anything you’d be happy to donate, we’d love to use it to help bring the fun and vibrant spirit to our brilliant Camp Out!

Donation points will be available inside the Manor House entrance hall and outside Mrs Tongue’s office.

Please bring your donations between Monday 16th – Monday 23rd June.

Thank you for helping us make it magical!
