“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
Robert Frost
As we await the return of Form VIII from their leavers’ trip to Bude, I find myself reflecting on this time as a threshold between endings and beginnings and it brings to mind Robert Frost’s famous poem “The Road Not Taken.” In it, the speaker stands “in a yellow wood,” faced with a fork in the path. He has to choose which path to follow.
This image feels particularly poignant at this time of year, reminding us that it is a season of transitions for all the children. The message of Frost’s poem is that the traveller must choose one path, knowing he may never return to try the other. It is a poem about choice, yes, but also about movement, change, and the quiet courage it takes to step into the unknown.
As we approach the end of the school year, all of the children (not only those in Form VIII) stand at a natural point of transition. For some, this will mean moving on to a new school; for others, stepping into a new year group, ready to take on fresh challenges and new expectations. Change is woven into the rhythm of school life, and with it comes the opportunity to grow, to reset, and to look forward with renewed purpose.
Transitions are of course present throughout the year too, every time a child quietly overcomes something they once found difficult, and it is at these moments when confidence builds and when identity begins to take shape.
As we look ahead to Speech Day in a couple of weeks’ time, we will be doing more than celebrating prizes. We will be recognising progress. The small, brave decisions. The acts of kindness. The resilience built along the way.
To all of our leavers, we are proud of the road you have walked at Beachborough, and we are excited, and confident, about the road you will now take. It may, as Frost suggests, make all the difference.
I am also delighted to share some wonderful news: Beachborough has received a Highly Commended award in the Muddy Best Schools Awards for Most Creative Learning Through Play, and we are Finalists in the category for Best Learning Support for Higher-Level Learners. A heartfelt thank you and congratulations to Mrs Butler, Mrs Raclawski, Miss Fry, Mrs Sumner, Mrs Tongue, and Mrs Exarheas for their hard work in preparing these entries.
Congratulations also to Form V for their outstanding performance in The BeachborOscars. It was a joy to see their work from drama lessons brought to life on stage with such confidence, creativity, and energy. The children performed with flair and composure, and perhaps most impressively, demonstrated excellent teamwork, supporting one another, sharing the spotlight, and taking pride in their shared success. Thank you to Mrs Andrew, Mrs Cox, and Mrs Exarheas for their guidance, encouragement, and for bringing the showcase together so brilliantly.
Wishing you all a warm and sunny weekend,
Simone
