Beachborough Prep's Deputy Head - Curriculum, Katy Lilley

Today, we’re shining a light on a colleague whose journey, passions and personality enrich daily life at Beachborough Prep.

Katy Lilley, our Deputy Head – Curriculum, joined the school in January 2025. With a deep love of learning and a commitment to helping every child uncover their strengths, Katy plays a key role in shaping a curriculum where curiosity, confidence and joy in learning can truly flourish.

Over to you, Katy…

Tell us a little about yourself – what you’re passionate about, your background, and what makes you, you:

I’m someone who loves learning, creating and connecting with people. I’m very family‑focused at heart and happiest outdoors especially in my walking boots with a dog beside me, whatever the weather. I also love being by the water, whether I’m swimming, attempting paddleboarding (badly!) or simply watching the sea.

I’m just as content gathered around a table with family and friends, cooking far too much food, chatting and enjoying good company. I have a real curiosity about people and genuinely enjoy hearing different stories and perspectives, preferably over good coffee. Family also means a great deal to me; I am a very proud mum to my boys, who keep me grounded and make me laugh every day.

What’s your role here at Beachborough?

I’m the Deputy Head – Curriculum at Beachborough. I work alongside staff and pupils to design a rich and inspiring curriculum that nurtures curiosity, builds confidence and gives every child the chance to explore their interests, discover their strengths and develop a lifelong love of learning.

What do you love most about being part of the Beachborough team?

When I first visited Beachborough on a sunny summer day, I immediately felt its warmth, energy and strong sense of community – it just felt right. I’m really excited to work alongside colleagues, pupils and families to nurture a curriculum that encourages adventure, curiosity and a genuine joy in learning.  I genuinely enjoy coming to work – everyday!

What inspired you to do what you do and what keeps you passionate about it today?

I’ve always loved learning, from school through to college and university, and that curiosity has never really switched off. I’m especially passionate about psychology, particularly child development, as well as sociology and thinking about the society we live in – what shapes us, and why people behave the way they do.

For me, teaching is about sharing a genuine enthusiasm for life and learning, and helping young people discover their own interests, strengths and confidence. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing that moment when something “clicks” for a child. When you truly love learning yourself, it’s hard not to want to pass that on.

Thank you Katy – We’re grateful to you for giving us a glimpse into what inspires you, both in and out of the classroom.
