U11 Girls win the Swanbourne House Girls Hockey Tournament

Despite the gloom and steady drizzle that greeted us as we arrived at Swanbourne the girls were in high spirits and determined to go out and enjoy an afternoon playing good hockey. Our ‘team talk’ focused on holding position, retaining the width and having the confidence to carry the ball prior to passing.

Each of the girls played their part in what became an extremely successful afternoon. India did not concede a single goal and made some great saves in the first match, which we won 4-0 against Akeley Wood. Emilia, Lucy and Bella P. played with much more confidence in Defence, stepping up to meet the ball and showing greater strength in tackling and distributing the ball, leading to a 2-0 win against Swanbourne’s A Team. Although we dominated play against the Dragon and did get the ball over the goal line, unfortunately it was disallowed and the end result was a frustrating 0-0 Draw. With defence holding firm our last two matches saw Lottie, Bella A., Jenna, Annie and Lucy working as a unit and pushing forward into the oppositions ‘D’ to score some excellent goals. Their passing, movement on and off the ball and sheer determination in front of goal showed real progression and was a pleasure to watch. Both the Swanbourne and Maidwell Hall teams were beaten 4-0.

This was undoubtedly the best Hockey that the girls had played so far and bodes well for the rest of the season. They fully deserved their Gold medals and Winners Shield. Well done girls.

Many thanks to all the girls for giving up their Saturday afternoon and a special thank you to the many parents who turned up to cheer the girls on.
