U9 Boys win at St Hughs

Thursday afternoon saw a record of 30 Beachborough runners competing in our season opener at St Hugh’s, with superb running from all of the children. This was a great chance for the Form III + IV children to get back into the swing of things and for many of Form I + II to compete in their first ever event. The short but hilly course provided a good challenge for all our runners and it was a delight to watch the runners go out and give it their all. The Under 11s went first and performed with great determination with captains Benedict Hartigan and Jemma Zimmermann performing particularly superb final laps and overtaking runners on the way. The Under 10s A teams both took early leads through outstanding first laps from Oliver Hartigan and Larissa Campbell but were just pipped into second by some very strong opposition. The U10 B team showed our strength in depth finishing a good minute ahead of the next B side. The Under 9s teams battled hard in a tough field but their hard work on a Friday lunchtime paid off and all gave creditable performances on an increasingly muddy and wet course. It was great to see the Under 8 girls enjoying their first event and I was delighted that they kept running the whole way round. The best result was saved until last when the Under 8 boys lead from start to finish thanks to Adam McClaren-Dobbie, with Samuel Davies extending his lead and Charlie Tuthill ensuring there was no chance of a comeback. This was a great performance and shows real promise for the future.
