Jonny wins 4th place at the Welsh Go Karting Championships

Congratulations to Jonny Wilkinson on finishing fourth in his first ever National competition at the Welsh Championship held in Llandow last weekend. Previous Welsh title winners have included the likes of Nigel Mansell so a breeding ground for stars of the future. After three days of practice and qualifying heats, top speeds on the straights of 76mph were reached by the top competitors and Jonny was right up there with them! All expectations had already been surpassed when Jonny qualified in 14th place on the grid for the final in a combined Cadet category of 24 drivers from England and Wales. Drivers across three different engine classes went head to head on track to battle for the title of Welsh Champion.A first lap incident unfortunately saw Jonny fall back to 22nd place. Over the remaining eleven laps Jonny began to climb back through the field of competitors to recover to finish 15th overall and 4th in his own IAME class. He also finished as highest place Novice across the combined cadet categories. Having never driven the track before this weekend and competing against a strong experienced field to finish just one position off the podium was a fantastic achievement and earned him his first ever winning purse. We wish Jonny every success next week when he will be driving in a club race at Whilton Mill and then competing in the South of England Championship the following weekend.
