Welcome to Year One

These are our five to six year olds. The good teaching practices which were started in Nursery and continued through Kindergarten and Reception are built on in Year One. There are some new additions to the curriculum and the weekly routine is slightly different.

Reading

The children will read on a regular basis and will progress through the school reading scheme at their own pace. Every week the children will visit the Pre Prep Library and select a book of their own choosing to share at home. At least twice a week the children will have story time sessions.

Speaking and listening

Speaking and listening skills will be developed through the year, providing the children with a range of opportunities to talk and listen in formal and informal settings including the annual Christmas play and any other performance events.

Writing

The children will be encouraged to become effective writers. They will learn to communicate with others; to create imaginary worlds; to explore experience, organise and explain information.

The children are encouraged to develop their observational skills and to be curious about a wide variety of scientific subjects.

We have a three-year rolling programme in the Pre-prep so that the children have an opportunity to experience a wide variety of History, Geography (Humanities) and Science to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Trips that are relevant to the Topic are undertaken regularly.

They have two lessons a week. The work is mainly oral, but they also use workbooks and videos.

The children have two periods per week. One is for instrument use and the other for musical appreciation and singing. Areas of study are:-

During the year the children will be involved in variety of art based work which will be both topic and non-topic related. They will be encouraged to see shape, colour texture and pattern to represent their feelings and ideas.
