Beachborough welcomes RAF ‘Tutor’

On Thursday 22nd May, at precisely 2pm, the pupils at Beachborough Preparatory School in Westbury watched a fabulous aerial display performed by the plane in which all Britain’s RAF pilots learn to fly.  Known in the service as the Royal Air Force Tutor, the Grob 115E is used in elementary flying training at RAF Cranwell, the Sandhurst of the RAF. Beachborough’s headmaster, Mr Jonathan Whybrow, was delighted to see such an inspiring event taking place in the skies above the school.  “Watching the breathtaking performance of Flight Lieutenant Andy Preece was incredibly motivating for our pupils,” he said.  “All the children at Beachborough are encouraged to reach for the sky.  Today they watched a very high-flying career in progress with their own eyes.”

Eight-year-old Henry Waller, a pupil at Beachborough, volunteered his father - an ex RAF display pilot - to help organise the event.  Trevor Waller had to spend a morning in the long grass at the end of the school’s sports field a few months ago, much to the amusement of Beachborough staff, working out the exact GPS co-ordinates the pilot would need to make sure that the display took place directly overhead.

After the sensational display, Mr Waller said how lucky the school had been to see the first show of the season.   “The aerobatics seen today are the same ones which will be performed at the Royal International Air Tattoo in July.  So the children had a preview of this years’ sequence which will be performed for some of the most important people in Britain this summer.”

And with the pilot performing aerobatics at speeds of up to 200mph, they were not disappointed.  After they had watched extraordinary stunts, many of which have equally extraordinary names – including The Avalanche, The Quarter Clover and The Reverse Cuban - the school’s registrar, Mrs Julie Isted said, “This is something the children will never forget.”

Saturday Forest School - October 13th

"It was brilliant. Tilly came out and said it was 'excellent', and Cressida looked as happy and as muddy as a child can be. They loved the ladybird hunt, and panning for treasure, and the sausages went down very well. There can't be many schools where the children clamour to go on a Saturday."

Team: Sam Miller (capt), Billy Lawrance-Thorne, Oak Richardson and Gabriel Smith.

Beachborough put in a fantastic performance on Friday 5th October at the Prep Schools' Challenge held at MCS, Oxford. The team performed well in all areas of this general knowledge competition and Billy was one of only two children to get full marks in the buzzer round. Saturday Forest School – June 30th

Thirty pupils, split into morning and afternoon groups, experienced a thoroughly enjoyable time at Forest School on Saturday. Although the weather was wet, it didn’t dampen the children’s enthusiasm and by the end of their session they had learnt how to make a hazel whistle, a marshmallow holder, a hanging bird feeder and cone feeders. They also went on a treasure trek along the stream which resulted in immense laughter as by the end of it, we were all covered in mud!  The trek culminated in them ‘panning for gold’. To finish off an excellent session the children sat around the camp fire and ate sausages and marshmallows!

Throughout the academic year 2005-2006 Beachborough pupils have been raising money in aid of Katharine House. During Speech Day, on Saturday 8th July, a cheque for £5,500 was presented to their Chairman, Mr Neil Gadsby.
