Credit to Uppingham School, the organisers of the U13 IAPS Netball tournament for making the tough decision to postpone Friday’s tournament to Monday: what a good move! We played in glorious sunshine all morning and, although it was still cold, enjoyed the feeling of the sun on our faces.
Fuelled by home-cooked goodies from their captain, Ele B, the players took the court in good spirits. We had to be organised and flexible; half time was simply a change of ends, with no time for team talks or deliberations over substitutes. The squad really supported one another and much encouragement could be heard between players. Ele B and Mattie G formed a positive partnership in the circle and created some good scoring opportunities. Centre, Florence T, continually boosted the team with her enthusiasm, excellent team spirit and tireless work rate.
We came up against tough opposition throughout our group, with some teams displaying very precise ball placement – one thing we know we need to work on. We didn’t manage to win any of our first four games, although matching some teams for goals up until half time. We could not seem to maintain the energy required for a whole game and were beaten in the last minutes of a few that we’d thought were within our grasp.
However, the girls showed perseverance and strength of character as they went on to win their last game, every single player in the squad making an impact. A big ‘Thank you!’ to Mrs Gross for umpiring and driving the minibus for us, and to the parents who came to support. Well done girls.
