Zachary placed 3rd in the U12 Giant Slalom at the BARSC Championships

Congratulations to Zachary Metheringham who was placed 3rd in the U12 Giant Slalom at the BARSC Championships, very close behind two local Tignes racers. Here’s a few words from Zac about his ski trip and races. On Boxing Day I travelled to the Alps to take part in a week’s training camp at Les Arc with Kandahar Racing and also the BARSC (British Alpine Racing Ski Clubs) Championships in Tignes.I was excited to be training with Kandahar as they have coached GBR No.1 Slalom Skier Dave Rydings and Sochi Para-Olympic Visually Impaired Gold Medalists Kelly Gallagher and Charlotte Evens. Kandahar Ski Racing are one of the oldest race clubs, founded in 1924, by Alfred Lunn (of Lunn Poly) with some famous members during its history including author Ian Fleming. The club annually runs the Scaramanga Roped Race on New Year’s Day in the Swiss Village of Murren – an event with a name bound to inspire a villain! The training camp included slalom, giant slalom training and lots of fitness and ski preparation work – very exhausting! At the BARSC hampionships my best race was the Giant Slalom where I came 3rd in the U12 behind two local Tignes racers. I was not so fortunate in the Kombi race, as I fell on my first run but my second run placed me 19th overall, racing against competitors up to 18 years old.For New Year I travelled to Les Houches, to take part in the Anglo Scottish Championships. The snow was thin on the ground and with a very strong second year U12 field I found the 3 days of racing very tough. Sadly no podium finishes, but I am narrowing the time gap for the Slalom, Kombi and Giant Slalom courses between myself and the older children in the U12 age group.Fingers crossed the snow keeps up for the training camps I have coming up in Leogang and Schladming in Austria.
